Chapter 7 - BEFORE THE CRASH

Phone records changed the timeline.

Emily crashed at 8:42 p.m.

Emergency services identified her at 9:17.

Ryan was notified at 9:31.

But at 8:56, Natalie sent Evan a text.

It’s done.

That text had been deleted from Evan’s phone.

The carrier retained metadata.

Ryan stared at the time.

Fourteen minutes after the crash.

Thirty-five minutes before anyone told the family.

Maya requested an arrest warrant.

Natalie disappeared before it could be served.

Her hotel suite was empty.

Her passport remained.

Her luggage remained.

The bed had not been slept in.

On the bathroom mirror, someone had written one sentence in lipstick.

ASK AVA ABOUT THE RED DOOR.

Ryan read it twice.

Ava sat with child psychologist Dr. Hannah Price.

No one pressured her.

Eventually Hannah asked—

“Do you know a red door?”

Ava nodded.

“Where?”

“Natalie’s secret house.”

Ryan felt his stomach tighten.

“What secret house?”

“The one by the water.”

“When were you there?”

Ava looked confused.

“With Natalie.”

Ryan almost stopped breathing.

Natalie had taken Ava somewhere without telling him.

“What happened there?”

“She talked to Uncle Evan.”

“Anything else?”

Ava thought.

“There was a lady picture.”

“What lady?”

“Mommy.”

Emily.

Ryan leaned forward.

“What picture of Mommy?”

“She was sleeping.”

Hannah gently stopped him from asking more.

Maya searched coastal properties connected to Natalie.

Nothing.

Then Marcus examined toll records.

Natalie’s car had repeatedly traveled north toward Ventura County.

One particular road appeared six times.

It ended near an abandoned marine research station.

The main building had a red steel door.

Police entered that evening.

Inside was a hidden office.

Photographs covered one wall.

Ryan.

Emily.

Evan.

Daniel.

Margaret.

Ava.

The oldest photograph of Emily was dated eight years earlier.

Long before Daniel’s death.

Long before Ryan met Natalie.

Natalie had been watching the Collins family for years.

A filing cabinet contained copies of Emily’s confidential investigation.

Daniel’s records.

Financial transfers.

And a photograph taken at Emily’s crash site.

Before emergency services arrived.

Someone had stood near the destroyed SUV and photographed it.

On the back, Natalie had written:

FIRST OBSTACLE REMOVED.

Ryan nearly collapsed.

Maya caught his arm.

In another drawer, Marcus discovered a laptop.

Most files were encrypted.

One folder opened.

AVA.

Inside were photographs of bruises.

Dozens.

Some taken by Natalie herself.

Ryan turned away.

Maya looked sick.

Then Marcus found videos.

Natalie speaking calmly to Ava.

Telling her Ryan would stop loving her if she complained.

Telling her nobody believed difficult children.

Telling her she could be sent away.

Ryan covered his face.

He had been traveling.

Building towers.

Closing deals.

While his daughter learned to fear bedtime.

Then one final video appeared.

Recorded two nights earlier.

Natalie looked directly into the camera.

“If Ryan finds this, then something went wrong.”

She smiled.

“But if something went wrong, I made sure I wouldn’t be the only one who lost everything.”

She held up a flash drive.

“Every payment.”

“Every bribe.”

“Every secret.”

“Twenty years of Collins history.”

She leaned closer.

“And one recording that proves exactly who ordered Emily Collins killed.”

The video ended.
