Chapter 18 - THE FALSE VICTORY
The trial began eight months later.
Prosecutors presented Daniel’s recording.
The courtroom heard Natalie’s voice moments before he fell.
Claire cried silently.
Evan testified.
He admitted his crimes.
He described Natalie pushing Daniel during the struggle.
Lucas described cutting Emily’s brake line.
Margaret testified that she financed the payment without understanding its true purpose.
The defense attacked everyone.
Evan was a thief.
Margaret was a criminal.
Lucas was paid.
Claire hated Natalie.
Ryan wanted revenge.
Then they attacked Ava.
Not directly.
They suggested a child could misunderstand.
Could repeat what adults told her.
Could confuse nightmares with reality.
Ryan gripped the table until his knuckles turned white.
Ava did not testify live.
Her forensic interview was played.
The jury watched a tiny four-year-old explain that Natalie grabbed her.
Threatened her.
Told her Daniel fell because he did not listen.
The defense looked uncomfortable.
Then the prosecutor played the videos Natalie recorded herself.
There was no misunderstanding.
Natalie’s own voice filled the courtroom.
Nobody believes difficult children.
That ended any doubt about the abuse.
The jury deliberated.

Then the foreperson returned.

Kidnapping.
Guilty.
Child abuse.
Guilty.
Conspiracy.
Guilty.
Emily Collins murder.
The courtroom held its breath.
Not guilty.
Ryan froze.
Claire gasped.
Maya closed her eyes.
The jury believed Natalie orchestrated events around Emily.
But they were not convinced beyond reasonable doubt that Lucas acted specifically under her direct murder order.
Natalie turned toward Ryan.
And smiled.
She had lost everything.
Yet she had escaped conviction for Emily.
That smile told Ryan she considered it victory.
Then a federal agent entered the courtroom.
He whispered to Maya.
Her expression changed.
She looked at Ryan.
“What?”
Maya leaned closer.
“They found the deleted audio.”
“What audio?”
“The complete call between Natalie and Lucas.”
Ryan stared.
Recovered from an offshore backup server seized that morning.
Natalie had been acquitted of state murder charges.
Double jeopardy prevented retrying the same state offense.
But the recording contained something else.
Natalie had paid Lucas across state lines.
Used interstate communications.
And instructed him to sabotage a vehicle as part of a racketeering conspiracy.
