Chapter 2: The Name No One Had Spoken

Chapter 2: The Name No One Had Spoken
The courtyard remained silent.
Even the musicians lowered their instruments.
The little boy clung tightly to the maid, his tiny fingers gripping her apron as though letting go meant disappearing again.
The groom knelt in front of him.
"What is your name, buddy?"
The child hesitated.
"My name is Daniel."
The elderly housekeeper gasped.
Her trembling hand flew to her mouth.
"No..." she whispered. "It can't be."
Every pair of eyes turned toward her.
The woman had served the estate for more than forty years.
She knew every secret the family had tried to bury.
The bride looked as though the ground beneath her had vanished.
"Why did you say that name?" the groom demanded.
The housekeeper struggled to breathe.
"Because... that was the name of her baby."
She pointed at the bride.
"The little boy everyone believed died five years ago."
The guests erupted into shocked whispers.
The bride burst into tears.
"I never said he died."
"You told everyone he disappeared," someone answered.
She slowly nodded.
"Because that's what I believed."
The groom stared at her.
"You never told me his name."
She lowered her eyes.
"I couldn't."
"Why?"
"Because every time I said it... I remembered the night I lost him."
The groom looked back at the frightened child.
The silver cross bracelet reflected the afternoon sunlight.
There was no doubt anymore.
It was the same bracelet shown in old family photographs.
The same bracelet engraved with two tiny initials.
D.C.
Daniel Carter.
The bride's son.
But one impossible question remained.
If Daniel had disappeared five years earlier...
Who had been raising him ever since?
The answer arrived before anyone was ready.
A black luxury SUV rolled through the estate gates.
The driver stepped out first.
Then an older woman dressed in expensive silk slowly emerged.
The moment she saw Daniel...
She stopped smiling.
And Daniel immediately hid behind the maid.
"I don't want to go back," he whispered.
"I don't want Grandma Evelyn to take me again."

The entire wedding froze.
Because Evelyn was the bride's own mother.
