Chapter 2: Arthur's Final Letter
Late that evening, investigators entered Arthur Sterling's private office with a newly issued warrant.
Nothing appeared unusual.
Books lined every wall.
Family photographs covered his desk.
Awards filled polished glass cabinets.
Then Detective Lee noticed a small brass key taped beneath Arthur's chair.
The key opened a hidden compartment behind an old grandfather clock.
Inside rested a single ivory envelope.
Across the front, written in Arthur's unmistakable handwriting, were five words.
For Emily. Only Emily.
Judge Harrison authorized the letter to be opened in the presence of detectives, attorneys, and Mrs. Gable.
Emily unfolded the pages with trembling hands.
Arthur's words filled the room.
"If you're reading this, I failed to stay alive long enough to protect you."
Emily began crying quietly.
"You are not here by accident. Eight years ago, your parents saved my life. They died because they refused to sell our company to people who wanted more than money. They wanted power."
Everyone listened in stunned silence.
"After they were murdered, I promised I would watch over you from a distance. Mrs. Gable honored that promise with me. She raised you as her own while the world believed you were simply her adopted daughter."
Mrs. Gable covered her mouth.
Emily looked at her with tear-filled eyes.
"You knew?"
Mrs. Gable nodded.
"Every single day."
Arthur's letter continued.
"Clara was never acting alone. There are others. They sit on boards, fund campaigns, and buy silence. They will stop at nothing to control Sterling Industries."
The final paragraph changed everything.
"Inside my office is another key. It opens a vault that contains every document needed to expose them all."
