Chapter 12 - Beatrice's Half-Truth

The half-truth came from Beatrice.

Not malicious.

Protective.

Still a half-truth.

She had known more about Elena's plan than she initially admitted.

One evening, she entered my study holding a sealed envelope.

“There's one last thing.”

“I've developed trust issues with envelopes.”

“I understand.”

She placed it down.

Elena's handwriting.

For Beatrice.

“Why do you have this?”

“She gave it to me personally.”

“When?”

“Two weeks before she died.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because it wasn't for you.”

I stared.

“Then why now?”

“Because part of it concerns Lily.”

She opened it.

Not me.

Inside, Elena had written instructions to Beatrice.

If Victoria becomes deeply involved in Lily's daily life, do not confront her directly.

Watch.

Document.

Protect Lily quietly until Leo can see clearly.

My throat tightened.

Elena had asked Beatrice to become a silent guardian.

That explained years of small things.

Beatrice always being nearby when Victoria babysat.

Beatrice knowing Lily's medications.

Beatrice keeping duplicate emergency supplies.

Beatrice monitoring security.

“You've been protecting her for four years.”

“I've been watching.”

“Same thing.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“The night of the cellar was protecting.”

“Why didn't you tell me about Elena's instructions?”

“Because I didn't trust your reaction.”

That hurt.

“Meaning?”

“You loved Victoria then.”

“I never—”

“You trusted her.”

Fair.

“And Elena told me not to force the truth before you were ready.”

I laughed bitterly.

“So everybody decided when I was ready.”

Beatrice looked at me.

“Yes.”

The honesty disarmed me.

“I was wrong.”

I waited.

“I should have told you when Victoria started asking about Lily's asthma.”

“Yes.”

“I was afraid.”

“I know.”

“I thought documentation was safer.”

“For whom?”

She didn't answer.

Exactly.

Silence often feels safe to the observer.

Not the person at risk.

“I forgive you.”

Beatrice looked surprised.

“That quickly?”

“No.”

I smiled faintly.

“I said it because I intend to get there.”

She laughed softly.

Then handed me the final page.

Elena had written:

Beatrice, if Leo ever learns all of this, he will blame himself.

Please don't let him.

I looked away.

Of course she knew.

Beatrice said nothing.

Good.

I didn't need comfort yet.

Then:

He will think being deceived means he was foolish.

Tell him it means he was grieving.

Tell him grief is not consent.

I sat.

Tears came.

Again.

Elena kept reaching into the future and catching me before I fell.

I hated her for being right.

Loved her for it.

Beatrice looked toward the door.

“There's another reason I stayed.”

“What?”

“Mrs. Rossi asked me to.”

“Elena?”

“Yes.”

“For how long?”

“Until Lily didn't need me.”

I looked upstairs.

“That's impossible to measure.”

“I know.”

“Then you're trapped.”

Beatrice smiled.

“That's why I'm rewriting the agreement.”

Good.

Elena would approve.

May you like

Beatrice wasn't family property either.

No one was.
