Chapter 3: A New Beginning

One year later, Noah took his first steps.

I cried harder than I did the day he was born.

Not because I was sad.

Because Caleb wasn't there to see it.

But in many ways, he was.

Every protection he had put in place.

Every decision he had made.

Every sacrifice.

They had given Noah and me a future.

The trust allowed me to finish my education and start a small foundation in Caleb's name.

The foundation helped widowed parents rebuild their lives.

Something Caleb would have loved.

One afternoon, as Noah played in the backyard, I sat on a bench reading Caleb's letter again.

The same letter I had read hundreds of times.

A small voice interrupted my thoughts.

"Mama?"

Noah ran toward me with a huge smile.

I lifted him into my arms.

"Yes, sweetheart?"

He pointed at a framed photograph on the porch.

"Dada."

I looked at Caleb's picture.

The familiar smile.

The kind eyes.

The man who had protected us even after he was gone.

"That's right," I whispered.

"That's your dad."

The sun slowly disappeared beyond the horizon.

For the first time since Caleb's death, my heart felt peaceful.

The fear was gone.

The fighting was over.

My family could no longer hurt us.

And Noah would grow up surrounded by love instead of manipulation.

I looked toward the sky and smiled.

"Thank you, Caleb."

The wind stirred softly through the trees.

May you like

And somehow, it felt like an answer.

The End.
