The bridal suite fell silent after Richard's confession.
No one spoke.
The music from the ballroom drifted faintly through the walls, cheerful and unaware that the wedding had already begun to collapse.
Marianne slowly reached toward the bracelet on Evelyn's wrist.
"Take it off."
Evelyn hesitated before unclasping it.
Marianne turned the bracelet over.
Inside, hidden beneath years of scratches, were four engraved words.

Her own handwriting.
Richard had commissioned the engraving after their anniversary.
"There can only be one of these," Marianne whispered.
Richard closed his eyes.
"I never meant for you to find out like this."
Ethan stepped forward.
"Then tell us the truth."
Richard looked from his son to Lily.
"You deserve better than the story you've been told."
Twenty-eight years earlier, Richard had been preparing to marry Marianne when he met Evelyn during a volunteer project after a devastating flood.
They had become close.
Too close.
Their brief affair ended before Richard's wedding, but it left behind something neither of them expected.
A child.
Richard believed the baby had died shortly after birth.
That was what Evelyn's parents had told him before sending her away to another city.
He never searched again.
Evelyn lowered her head.
"They lied to both of us."
Richard frowned.
"What do you mean?"
"My daughter lived."
The room froze.
Lily stared at her mother.
"My daughter survived," Evelyn repeated. "But she wasn't raised by me."
Richard's knees nearly gave out.
"If Lily isn't..."
Evelyn slowly shook her head.
"No."
Marianne felt the air leave her lungs.
"If Lily isn't your daughter..."
"Then the child who survived is still out there."
