Chapter 2: The Woman Who Knew the Truth

Chapter 2: The Woman Who Knew the Truth
Three days later, the wedding remained postponed.
Instead, Hannah, Evelyn, and Ava drove to the abandoned Saint Catherine's Orphanage.
Most of the records had been destroyed years earlier.
But an elderly former nurse, Margaret Ellis, still lived nearby.
When she saw Ava wearing the locket, her face turned pale.
"I knew this day would come."
She invited them inside.
For years she had carried a secret that had destroyed her peace.
She opened a rusted metal box and removed an envelope marked:
DO NOT DESTROY.
Inside were admission papers.
One name had been crossed out.
Amelia Whitman.
Below it, written in different handwriting:
Ava Ross.
There was also a payment receipt.
Someone had donated a fortune to the orphanage the same week Amelia arrived.
The donor's name froze everyone.
Richard Hartwell.
Patricia's late husband.
The groom's father.
Hannah stared at the document in disbelief.
"My future father-in-law paid to hide my sister?"
Margaret nodded slowly.
"He said powerful families sometimes erased inconvenient children."
"But why?" Ava whispered.
Margaret lowered her eyes.
"Because Richard Hartwell caused the accident that separated your family."
Twenty-three years earlier, Richard had struck Evelyn's car during a snowstorm.
Instead of calling the police, he panicked.
Afraid the scandal would destroy his business empire, he bribed corrupt officials.
Amelia was taken from the crash scene alive.
Her identity was erased before Evelyn woke in the hospital.
Everyone believed the child had died.

Except she hadn't.
She had simply been stolen.
