Chapter 1: The Second Half of the Photograph

Chapter 1: The Second Half of the Photograph

No one spoke.

The orchestra had stopped playing.

Even the waiters stood frozen, trays suspended in their hands.

Evelyn Whitman stared at the faded photograph inside the locket as tears blurred her vision.

"I named her Amelia," she whispered. "She was only three when she disappeared."

Ava frowned.

"My name has always been Ava."

Evelyn shook her head.

"Someone changed it."

Hannah rushed to her mother's side.

"Mom... are you sure?"

Instead of answering, Evelyn pulled a worn leather wallet from her purse. Hidden inside was another tiny photograph, folded so many times its edges had turned white.

She placed it beside the half inside Ava's locket.

The torn edges fit perfectly.

Gasps echoed through the ballroom.

There was no mistake.

The two halves had belonged together for twenty-three years.

Patricia Hartwell stepped forward.

"This proves nothing."

Her voice sounded less confident now.

"Old photographs can be copied."

Before anyone could respond, an elderly man stood from one of the back tables.

"I remember that child."

Every head turned.

It was Father Michael Donovan, a retired priest who had spent decades working with abandoned children.

He walked slowly toward Ava.

"I visited Saint Catherine's Orphanage many years ago."

Ava's heartbeat quickened.

"The sisters always wondered why a little girl arrived wearing such an expensive gold locket."

Father Michael looked directly at Evelyn.

"They were told never to ask questions."

Silence swallowed the room.

Someone had wanted Amelia Whitman to disappear.

And someone had made sure no one would ever look for her there.
