CHAPTER 18

The Ghost Who Refused to Die
The classified file weighed almost nothing.
Yet in Charles Sterling's hands...
It felt heavier than every crime he had committed over the last twenty-three years.
He opened it carefully.
The first page bore a faded government seal.
Across the top, in bold black letters, were the words:
TOP SECRET
COMMANDER ALEXANDER HALE
STATUS: MISSING IN ACTION
Charles laughed quietly.
"So many intelligent people..."
"...fooled by one word."
He flipped to the final page.
Someone had crossed out Missing in red ink years ago.
Below it, handwritten in elegant script, were two words.
Still alive.
Twenty-two years earlier...
The North Atlantic.
A military intelligence vessel drifted through dense fog.
Commander Alexander Hale stood on the bridge, studying encrypted satellite reports.
He was thirty-four.
One of the youngest intelligence officers ever promoted to command.
Respected.
Decorated.
Feared by America's enemies.
And secretly...
In love with Evelyn Sterling.
Only a handful of people knew about their relationship.
One of them...
Was Charles Sterling.
A violent explosion shattered the silence.
The ship lurched sideways.
Warning sirens screamed.
Smoke filled the bridge.
Alexander ordered the crew to abandon ship.
The vessel disappeared beneath the freezing ocean within minutes.
Officially...
No survivors were ever found.
Officially...
Commander Alexander Hale died a hero.
Officially...
The case was closed.
Only Charles Sterling knew...
The explosion had never been an accident.
Present day...
The Rossi estate.
Dante listened as Daniel Cross finished his statement.
"The sniper attack wasn't Plan A."
Daniel's voice remained hoarse.
"It was Plan C."
Marco looked up.
"What happened to Plans A and B?"
Daniel slid two photographs across the table.
The first showed the helicopter that had flown Aria to Maine.
A small explosive device had been attached beneath its landing gear.
"It never detonated."
Daniel nodded.
"The timer failed because of the snow."
The second photograph showed Dr. Helen Brooks' cottage.
Hidden among the trees...
A rifle position.
"I was supposed to kill the doctor before she spoke."
Dante's jaw tightened.
"But?"
"I couldn't."
Daniel lowered his eyes.
"She reminded me of my mother."
Silence.
Marco collected the photographs.
"Charles prepared multiple contingencies."
"He always does."
Daniel answered.
"He never relies on one plan."
Meanwhile...
Aria and Luca walked through the winter gardens.
Snow crunched beneath their boots.
For two people who had shared the same womb...
Conversation came surprisingly easily.
Luca smiled.
"I never liked birthdays."
Aria looked at him.
"I didn't either."
"I always felt..."
He searched for the right words.
"...like someone was missing."
Aria stopped walking.
"So did I."
Neither spoke for several moments.
The realization hurt.
Every birthday.
Every Christmas.
Every lonely night.
They had both sensed the absence of someone they had never known.
Luca laughed softly.
"This is going to sound ridiculous."
"Try me."
"When I was little..."
"I used to leave half my birthday cake untouched."
"Why?"
"I thought maybe..."
He looked embarrassed.
"...someone else might need it."
Aria covered her mouth.
Tears filled her eyes.
"I did the same thing."
Luca stared.
"No."
She nodded.
"I always saved half."
Silence.
Not painful.
Beautiful.
Somehow...
Their hearts had remembered what their minds had forgotten.
Inside the mansion...
Lucia stood in the music room.
She opened an old cedar chest that had belonged to Dante's mother.
Inside were programs from charity galas.
Opera tickets.
Newspaper clippings.
Photographs.
One picture immediately caught her attention.
A charity fundraiser.
Twenty-four years earlier.
Evelyn Sterling stood beside Commander Alexander Hale.
Both smiled naturally.
Not like acquaintances.
Like two people deeply in love.
Lucia turned the photograph over.
Someone had written a short sentence on the back.
Until the sea gives you back to me.
No signature.
Only the letter...
A.
Lucia hurried toward Dante's office.
"You need to see this."
He studied the photograph.
Then noticed something else.
Hidden near the edge of the frame.
Charles Sterling.
Watching them.
His smile was gone.
Even in the photograph...
Hatred burned in his eyes.
Marco entered moments later.
"Our investigators uncovered another classified record."
He placed a military archive on the desk.
"The Navy reopened Alexander Hale's disappearance five years ago."
"Why?"
"Because someone kept accessing his classified file."
Dante frowned.
"Who?"
Marco answered quietly.
"The accesses came from inside the Department of Defense."
Across Boston...
Charles Sterling received another encrypted phone call.
"They know about Alexander."
"I expected that."
"They'll eventually learn he's alive."
Charles smiled.
"They're supposed to."
The man on the other end hesitated.
"You planned this?"
"For twenty-three years."
Charles walked toward the window.
Looking over the city he had manipulated for decades.
"The moment Dante Rossi begins searching for Alexander..."
"He'll open doors that should never be opened."
"What doors?"
Charles's expression darkened.
"The ones that powerful people buried after the Cold War."
That night...
Dante couldn't sleep.
He returned to the greenhouse.
He found Aria sitting beside the fountain.
She was reading her mother's letter again.
"You always come here."
She smiled.
"It feels peaceful."
He sat beside her.
"What are you thinking about?"
She looked toward the sleeping rose bushes.
"My father."
Dante remained silent.
She corrected herself.
"Charles."
"It still feels strange."
"He doesn't deserve the title."
She nodded.
"No."
"But someone does."
She unfolded the old photograph Lucia had found.
Commander Alexander Hale.
Young.
Confident.
Gray eyes filled with warmth.
She stared at him.
"I don't know why..."
"...but he feels familiar."
Dante looked at the photograph.
"So do your eyes."
She looked at him.
"You think..."
"I think it's possible."
He answered honestly.
"But possibility isn't proof."
She smiled faintly.
"You're always careful."
"I have to be."
"Why?"
"Because hope can be dangerous."
She lowered her gaze.
"I know."
He gently placed a hand over hers.
"But truth..."
"...is worth waiting for."
For the first time...
She didn't pull away.
Far away...
In a remote mountain cabin hidden deep within the forests of Montana...
An elderly man stepped onto a wooden porch.
His beard had turned silver.
A deep scar crossed the left side of his face.
Years of hard labor had bent his shoulders.
But his gray eyes...
Had never changed.
A small battery-powered radio sat beside him.
The evening news reported the attempted assassination at the Rossi estate.
Then another headline.
Questions continue surrounding the Sterling family after new evidence emerges regarding the late Evelyn Sterling.
The old man's hands froze.
He hadn't heard that name...
In twenty-three years.
Slowly...
He opened an old wooden box.
Inside rested three precious possessions.
A faded photograph of a smiling woman.
A tiny knitted pink baby sock.
And a newspaper clipping announcing:
COMMANDER ALEXANDER HALE PRESUMED DEAD
He looked toward the distant mountains.
His voice barely rose above a whisper.
"Evelyn..."
"What happened?"
Before he could think further...
A satellite phone hidden beneath the box began to ring.
It had remained silent...
For twenty-two years.
No one had ever called it.
Not once.
The old man stared at the blinking light.
Then slowly answered.
A calm female voice spoke only one sentence.
"They found Aria."
The phone slipped from his trembling fingers.
His daughter.
Alive.
For twenty-three years...
He had believed she had died with her mother.
Tears welled in eyes that had not cried since the day he disappeared.
He looked toward the night sky and whispered,
"I failed you once..."
"I won't fail you again."
For the first time in more than two decades...
May you like
Commander Alexander Hale...
Began the journey home.
