CHAPTER 17

The Sniper's Bullet

The gunshot echoed through the Rossi estate like thunder.

Glass exploded across the marble floor.

Instinct took over before anyone had time to think.

Dante moved first.

"Down!"

He lunged toward Aria just as a second bullet tore through the space where she had been standing.

The crystal chandelier above them shivered violently.

Fragments of glass rained onto the polished floor.

Marco drew his pistol.

"Sniper!"

Lucia pulled Rosa behind a stone column while the security team rushed into defensive positions.

Luca didn't hesitate.

Without knowing why, he threw himself over Aria, shielding her with his own body.

For one terrifying second...

The twins clung to each other without realizing it.

Outside...

Nearly eight hundred yards away, on a wooded ridge overlooking the estate...

A man lay hidden beneath a white camouflage tarp.

He calmly adjusted his scope.

His target had never been Dante Rossi.

It had always been the woman beside him.

Aria.

He exhaled slowly.

His finger tightened on the trigger.

Before he could fire...

A red laser dot appeared on his chest.

His eyes widened.

Too late.

A single suppressed shot echoed through the trees.

The rifle flew from his hands.

His shoulder exploded with pain.

He rolled behind a fallen log.

"Move!"

he shouted into his radio.

"We've been spotted!"

On another ridge...

Marco's elite counter-sniper team had already located the shooter.

Commander Victor Kane lowered his rifle.

"Target wounded."

"He's retreating."

Marco's voice came through the earpiece.

"Don't kill him."

"I want him alive."

Back inside the mansion...

Aria slowly opened her eyes.

She was lying beneath Luca's protective embrace.

He looked down at her.

"You okay?"

She nodded.

"I..."

She stopped.

"You protected me."

Luca laughed nervously.

"I don't know why."

"I just..."

He searched for the words.

"It felt wrong to let anything happen to you."

Aria smiled through trembling tears.

"I think I know why."

Dante extended a hand.

"Everyone to the panic room."

"No."

Aria surprised everyone.

She slowly stood.

"I'm done hiding."

Dante frowned.

"This isn't the time."

She looked directly at him.

"I spent twenty-three years hiding."

"I won't spend another minute letting Charles Sterling decide where I stand."

The room fell silent.

Lucia looked at Dante.

There was pride in her eyes.

Dante finally nodded.

"Then we end this."

Thirty minutes later...

The wounded sniper was captured three miles from the estate.

His escape vehicle had been disabled by Rossi security.

He refused to speak during transport.

Until Dante entered the interrogation room.

The sniper smiled despite the blood soaking through his shoulder.

"I wondered when I'd meet the Butcher."

Dante sat opposite him.

"My reputation saves time."

"It does."

The sniper chuckled.

"You won't get anything from me."

Dante leaned back calmly.

"I probably won't."

He placed a photograph on the table.

The sniper glanced down.

His expression changed instantly.

A little girl.

Around eight years old.

Smiling in front of a school.

The sniper's daughter.

"How..."

he whispered.

Dante answered quietly.

"She's safe."

"So is your wife."

"I don't threaten families."

"I protect them."

The sniper looked confused.

"I don't understand."

Dante slid another folder across the table.

Inside were copies of offshore bank transfers.

Every payment Charles Sterling had made over the past six years.

"You weren't hired."

Dante said softly.

"You were blackmailed."

Silence.

The sniper stared at the papers.

"You know about Emily."

Dante nodded.

"Your daughter."

"Charles paid for her medical treatments."

"In return..."

"You became his weapon."

The sniper closed his eyes.

"He said if I refused..."

"He'd stop paying."

Dante spoke gently.

"Your daughter had surgery last year."

"She's healthy now."

The man looked up.

"How do you know that?"

"Because I paid the final hospital bill."

The sniper froze.

"What?"

"When Charles stopped paying three months ago..."

"My people took over."

"You never noticed because the hospital wasn't allowed to tell you."

The room became painfully quiet.

Tears formed in the hardened assassin's eyes.

"He..."

"He abandoned us?"

Dante nodded.

"The moment you became expendable."

The sniper covered his face.

Twenty years of violence collapsed under the weight of one simple truth.

Charles Sterling had never cared about him.

Or anyone else.

His shoulders shook.

"My name..."

he whispered.

"...is Daniel Cross."

He looked directly at Dante.

"I'll tell you everything."

Meanwhile...

In the greenhouse...

Aria and Luca sat alone among the winter roses.

Neither knew how to begin.

Finally, Luca smiled awkwardly.

"So..."

"I guess this is strange."

She laughed softly.

"Probably the strangest conversation either of us has ever had."

He nodded.

"I've always wished I had a sister."

She looked at him.

"I always wished I wasn't alone."

Silence settled comfortably between them.

Unlike before...

It wasn't painful.

It was peaceful.

Luca reached into his jacket pocket.

"I brought something."

He unfolded the faded photograph Mrs. Grant had given him.

Evelyn holding two newborn babies.

Aria smiled through tears.

"Mother."

He nodded.

"I think she was beautiful."

"She was."

"You remember her?"

"A little."

"I remember her voice."

"I remember roses."

"I remember music."

Luca closed his eyes.

"I don't remember any of that."

He looked down.

"I feel like someone stole my childhood."

Aria gently took his hand.

"They stole mine too."

"But..."

She smiled sadly.

"They didn't steal today."

At that moment...

Marco entered carrying new intelligence reports.

"We've confirmed Daniel's testimony."

Dante looked up.

"What did Charles want?"

Marco placed several photographs on the table.

Each showed different people.

Judges.

Police commissioners.

Business leaders.

Politicians.

"What are these?"

"Charles Sterling's insurance policy."

Every photograph showed one thing in common.

Hidden meetings.

Secret payments.

Bribes.

Blackmail.

Marco continued.

"Daniel says Charles has spent twenty-three years building a network."

"He owns judges."

"He owns senators."

"He owns federal investigators."

"And if he's arrested..."

"Half the city falls with him."

Lucia looked horrified.

"So this was never about one family."

Marco nodded.

"No."

"It was about controlling an entire system."

Dante turned toward the window.

Snow continued falling over Boston.

"Then we don't just expose Charles."

He said quietly.

"We dismantle everything."

Across town...

Charles Sterling stood inside his underground office.

A wounded bodyguard rushed inside.

"The sniper failed."

"I know."

Charles didn't even look up.

"They captured Daniel."

Still calm.

"They'll learn everything."

Charles finally smiled.

"No."

"They'll learn what I wanted Daniel to know."

The bodyguard frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Charles opened another hidden safe.

Inside rested a thick sealed envelope marked:

Project Phoenix

He picked it up carefully.

"The real secret..."

he whispered,

"...was never Aria."

He looked toward an old photograph of Commander Alexander Hale.

Then into the flames of the fireplace.

"It was always her father."

Far beneath the photograph...

Another hidden compartment slowly unlocked with a mechanical click.

Inside rested a military intelligence file stamped:

CLASSIFIED

Commander Alexander Hale

Status: Missing

Charles smiled coldly.

"They all believe Alexander Hale died twenty-two years ago."

He slowly closed the file.

May you like

"They're about to discover..."

"...that some ghosts never stayed buried."
