The diner looked completely different.

A larger kitchen.
A sign hung beside the entrance.

Underneath it were smaller words.
If you can't pay, we'll still feed you.
Customers came from all over the state.
Not because of the renovations.

Every morning, one table remained reserved.
Not for celebrities.
Not for politicians.

The old manager now volunteered there every day.
He greeted every child personally.
Sometimes he quietly added dessert.
The chef still cooked every breakfast himself.
One afternoon he found Ethan standing outside.
Watching a little girl finish a stack of pancakes.
"You did this," the chef said.

"You did."
The chef laughed.
"I only served one breakfast."

"No."
