CHAPTER 1 — THE ENVELOPE

Nobody spoke.
One hundred and sixty wedding guests stood inside the grand ballroom, whispering as my father walked to the center of the room.
Joan followed behind him, her confidence fading with every step.
Madison stayed close to her mother.
For the first time in her life...
She looked afraid.
My father climbed onto the small stage where the string quartet had been preparing to play.
Instead of welcoming everyone...
He held up the cream-colored envelope.
"My wife asked me not to open this today," he said quietly.
Joan's face turned ghost white.
"But after what she did to my daughter..."
He slowly broke the seal.
The room was silent.
Inside was a stack of documents.
Not letters.
Legal records.
Bank statements.
Property transfers.
A DNA report.
My father looked at Joan.
"You told me these files were fake."
Joan didn't answer.
"You told me Dakota was trying to destroy this family."
Still nothing.
Then he turned toward every guest.
"For twelve years..."
"I believed my daughter was selfish."
"I believed she lied."
"I believed every accusation my wife made."
His voice cracked.
"I was wrong."
Gasps spread across the ballroom.
My father raised the first document.
"It turns out Joan secretly transferred nearly two million dollars from family trust accounts into businesses owned by her relatives."
Another page.
"She forged my signature."
Another.
"She sold jewelry that belonged to Dakota's late mother."
Another.
"And every time money disappeared..."
"She blamed Dakota."
Joan finally shouted.
"Thomas! Stop this!"
He ignored her.
Then he lifted the final page.
The DNA report.
Madison grabbed her mother's arm.
"No..."
Joan whispered.
"No..."
My father looked directly at Madison.
"You are not my daughter."
The room exploded.
People stood.
Someone dropped a wine glass.
Several guests pulled out their phones.
Madison burst into tears.
"I didn't know..."
She looked at Joan.
"Mom..."
"You told me Dad was my father."
Joan couldn't speak.
May you like
For the first time...
She had no lie left to tell.
