CHAPTER 3 — THE LETTER HIS MOTHER LEFT BEHIND

While investigators searched Marissa's bedroom, they discovered a locked wooden box.

Inside were insurance papers.

Bank transfers.

And one unopened envelope.

Written in elegant handwriting were the words:

For Noah's eighteenth birthday.

Daniel recognized the handwriting instantly.

His late wife.

Hands trembling, he opened it.

"My dearest Noah,

If you are reading this early, something has gone terribly wrong.

There is one person I prayed would never come into your life again.

Marissa Hale.

She once worked for my father.

She believed she deserved our family's fortune.

After stealing money from the company, she disappeared.

If she ever returns...

Protect yourself.

Protect your father.

She will never stop chasing what she believes belongs to her."

Daniel could barely breathe.

His late wife had known.

Years before she died.

The investigation uncovered everything.

Marissa had changed her surname.

Forged her past.

Manipulated Daniel while he was drowning in grief.

She had married him for one purpose.

His fortune.

Noah was the only obstacle.

Months later, Marissa was convicted of attempted murder, child abuse, fraud, and conspiracy.

She was sentenced to decades in prison.

Noah's arm healed completely.

The scars slowly faded.

Some wounds, however, could never be seen.

Daniel sold the mansion.

He spent less time building skyscrapers and more time rebuilding the only thing that truly mattered.

His relationship with his son.

Evelyn never left their lives.

She became Noah's legal guardian whenever Daniel traveled.

Years later, at Noah's high school graduation, Daniel stood before hundreds of parents with tears in his eyes.

"My son once begged me to believe him," he said.

"I almost failed him."

Noah smiled, wrapped one arm around his father and the other around Evelyn.

"We're all still here," he whispered.

"And that's enough."

Sometimes evil hides behind the warmest smile.

Sometimes the smallest voice speaks the greatest truth.
