Chapter 14 - The Family They Chose

Six months later, the Rossi mansion looked different.

The cellar was sealed.

The hidden room had been emptied.

The old photographs were gone.

The walls had been repainted.

But Leo refused to erase everything.

Some memories deserved to remain.

Not the ones that caused pain.

The ones that proved they survived it.

Lily ran through the garden.

She was laughing.

Really laughing.

The sound carried through the open windows.

Beatrice stood on the terrace.

She wore a simple blue dress.

No uniform.

No apron.

No name tag.

For the first time in her adult life, she wasn't someone's servant.

She wasn't invisible.

Leo walked out carrying two cups of coffee.

"Thought you might want this."

Beatrice took one.

"Thank you."

He leaned against the railing.

"How does it feel?"

"What?"

"Not working for me."

She smiled.

"Strange."

"Good strange?"

"Very."

Leo looked toward the garden.

Lily was chasing butterflies.

"She still asks about you."

Beatrice laughed.

"She sees me every day."

"She asks why you don't sleep in the guest room anymore."

Beatrice nearly choked on her coffee.

"Leo."

"I'm just warning you."

"She's six."

"Exactly."

They laughed.

It was the first time the mansion had sounded like a home.

Adrian survived.

The bullet had passed through his shoulder.

He spent months recovering.

But he stayed.

He had missed twenty-two years with his daughter.

He refused to miss another day.

Their relationship wasn't easy.

Beatrice didn't suddenly forget everything.

She didn't forgive him overnight.

Sometimes she was angry.

Sometimes she couldn't look at him.

Sometimes she asked questions he couldn't answer.

But Adrian never left.

When she pushed him away, he waited.

When she screamed, he listened.

When she cried, he stayed.

One evening, Beatrice found him sitting alone in the garden.

"Can I ask you something?"

Adrian nodded.

"Why didn't you come back sooner?"

He looked at his hands.

"Because I thought staying dead would protect you."

"Did it?"

"No."

"Then why?"

"I was afraid."

Beatrice sat beside him.

"Everyone was afraid."

Adrian looked at her.

"Your mother."

"Victoria."

"Elena."

"Leo."

"Even me."

Beatrice smiled sadly.

"Fear ruined all of us."

Adrian nodded.

"But you survived."

She looked at him.

"So did you."

He smiled.

"Can I call you my daughter?"

Beatrice's eyes filled with tears.

"You've always been my father."

Adrian broke down.

For the first time in twenty-two years, he allowed himself to cry.

Beatrice leaned against his shoulder.

Neither said another word.

Elena returned three months later.

She came without warning.

Lily was the first to see her.

She was standing at the garden gate.

Lily stared.

Then whispered:

"Mommy?"

Elena covered her mouth.

Tears filled her eyes.

Lily ran.

Elena dropped to her knees.

The little girl threw herself into her arms.

"I missed you."

Elena held her tightly.

"I missed you too."

Leo watched from the terrace.

He couldn't move.

Elena looked up.

Their eyes met.

Twenty-two years of lies stood between them.

But so did forgiveness.

Eventually, Leo walked down the steps.

"Thank you."

Elena shook her head.

"I should be thanking you."

"For what?"

"For believing Beatrice."

Leo looked at her.

"I should have believed her sooner."

"You did in the end."

"After she nearly died."

Elena lowered her eyes.

"That's why I came back."

"Why?"

"I need to tell you one last thing."

Leo stiffened.

"What?"

Elena reached into her coat.

She pulled out a small envelope.

"This was your wife's."

Leo froze.

"Where did you get it?"

"She gave it to me the night before the bombing."

He took it.

His hands trembled.

The envelope had his name on it.

Leo.

He opened it.

Inside was one final letter.

My love,

If you are reading this, then something happened to me.

Don't spend your life hunting the people responsible.

Don't let Lily grow up surrounded by revenge.

And don't let Beatrice believe she was unwanted.

She was loved.

She was always loved.

Tell her that.

Tell both girls.

You were always meant to find each other.

And when you do...

choose family over power.

Leo couldn't continue.

Tears blurred the page.

Elena touched his shoulder.

"She loved you."

Leo nodded.

"I know."

That evening, the family gathered around the dining table.

Leo.

Lily.

Beatrice.

Adrian.

Elena.

Even Mateo sat with them.

For the first time, there were no guards standing behind the chairs.

No weapons.

No threats.

No secrets.

Lily looked around.

"Are we a family?"

Everyone went silent.

Leo looked at Beatrice.

Then Elena.

Then Adrian.

He smiled.

"Yes."

Lily grinned.

"Good."

She picked up her fork.

"I'm hungry."

Everyone laughed.

The mansion had once been built to intimidate people.

Now it was filled with laughter.

But not everything was finished.

One piece of the past remained.

The original ledger.

Leo had kept it.

Not as a weapon.

As evidence.

One evening, he placed it in a secure archive.

He opened the final page.

There was one name he had never seen before.

A name written in his father's handwriting.

LUCAS ROSSI.

Leo froze.

His grandfather's first name.

Below it was a date.

2031.

Three years in the future.

And beside it:

PROJECT RESTART.

Leo's blood ran cold.

The network wasn't completely dead.

Someone had planned for the old man to be arrested.

Someone had planned for the future.

Someone had left instructions.

Leo closed the ledger.

Then smiled.

Because for the first time...

he wasn't afraid.

May you like

He had a family.

And he would protect them.
