Chapter 11 - Elena

Leo didn't sleep.
Neither did Beatrice.
The truth had become too large for either of them to process.
Elena.
The woman they had buried.
The woman everyone believed dead.
The woman who had apparently predicted everything.
And Lily.
Missing.
Held by someone who claimed to be protecting her.
Leo stood in his study.
The city lights burned beyond the windows.
Mateo entered.
"We found Daniel."
Leo turned.
"Where?"
"An old train station."
"Is Lily with him?"
"No."
Leo's jaw tightened.
"Then what did he leave?"
"A message."
Mateo handed him a phone.
A video played.
Daniel appeared on screen.
"Lily is alive."
Leo's shoulders loosened slightly.
"She's with someone who loves her."
"Who?"
"Someone you thought was dead."
The video ended.
Leo stared.
Then his phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
A woman's voice said:
"Leo."
He froze.
It was impossible.
But he knew it.
Elena.
His wife's voice had been softer.
Elena's was different.
Older.
Stronger.
But unmistakably the voice from the old memories.
"Where is my daughter?"
Leo could barely speak.
"Elena?"
"Yes."
"You're alive."
"I've been alive for twenty-two years."
"Where is Lily?"
"Safe."
"Bring her home."
"I will."
"When?"
"When you understand why she was taken."
Leo's voice hardened.
"Explain."
"Victoria isn't the enemy."
Leo went silent.
"What?"
"She was manipulated."
"She murdered my wife."
"She did."
"Then how is she not the enemy?"
"Because someone gave her an ultimatum."
"What ultimatum?"
"If she didn't obey, they would kill Beatrice."
Leo's eyes narrowed.
"Who?"
Elena hesitated.
"The man who created the network."
"Marcus Rossi?"
"No."
"Samuel Voss?"
"No."
"Then who?"
Elena whispered:
"Your wife."
Leo's heart stopped.
"My wife?"
"She wasn't only a victim."
"What are you saying?"
"She was working with us."
Leo shook his head.
"No."
"She infiltrated the organization."
"She loved Lily."
"I know."
"She would never—"
"She did it to protect both girls."
Leo couldn't speak.
Elena continued.
"Your wife discovered the children were being moved through hospitals."
"The hospital?"
"Yes."
"That's how Beatrice disappeared."
Leo closed his eyes.
Everything connected.
The fake medical records.
The missing childhood.
The false identity.
The hospital.
Elena.
His wife.
Victoria.
"Why did my wife die?"
"Because she was discovered."
"By whom?"
Elena's voice became quiet.
"By me."
Leo froze.
"What?"
"I betrayed her."
"Why?"
"Because I thought I could save Beatrice."
"And you couldn't."
"No."
A long silence.
"I saved Beatrice."
"But I lost your wife."
Leo's hand shook.
"Where are you?"
"I can't tell you."
"Why?"
"Because someone is listening."
Then the call ended.
Leo stared at the phone.
Beatrice entered.
"What happened?"
Leo looked at her.
"Your mother is alive."
Beatrice froze.
For several seconds, she didn't move.
Then she whispered:
"Where?"
"I don't know."
"Did you talk to her?"
"Yes."
"What did she say?"
Leo hesitated.
"She said Lily is safe."
Beatrice closed her eyes.
Relief flooded her face.
Then she opened them.
"What else?"
Leo looked at her.
"She said your mother betrayed my wife."
Beatrice stared.
"No."
"She said it herself."
"No."
"Beatrice—"
"My mother wouldn't."
"She said she did."
Beatrice stepped backward.
"Then I need to hear her say it."
Leo nodded.
"We'll find her."
They found Elena's location through an old medical record.
A clinic in Wisconsin.
Closed twenty years ago.
But the property still existed.
Leo drove through the night.
Mateo followed.
Adrian stayed behind to protect the mansion.
Beatrice sat beside Leo.
Neither spoke.
When they reached the clinic, the building was empty.
But a light burned in one room.
Leo entered.
Beatrice followed.
A woman stood by the window.
Gray hair.
Thin face.
A scar along her jaw.
She turned.
Beatrice stopped.
She knew her.
Not from photographs.
From memory.
"Mommy?"
Elena began crying.
Beatrice ran toward her.
They embraced.
Twenty-two years collapsed in one second.
Elena held her daughter like she had been holding her in her mind every day since the night they were separated.
"I'm sorry."
Beatrice sobbed.
"You left me."
"I know."
"You erased me."
"I know."
"You let me believe you were dead."
"I had no choice."
"You always had a choice."
Elena nodded.
"You're right."
Leo stood behind them.
Elena looked at him.
"I'm sorry."
Leo's voice was cold.
"Why did my wife die?"
Elena lowered her eyes.
"Because of me."
Beatrice turned.
"Tell us everything."
Elena took a breath.
"Twenty-two years ago, Marcus Rossi discovered that I had stolen his ledger."
Leo listened.
"I was going to expose him."
"But he found out."
"Yes."
"He tried to kill you."
"Yes."
"And my wife?"
"She helped me escape."
Leo's eyes darkened.
"Then why did you betray her?"
Elena began crying.
"I didn't."
Leo froze.
"What?"
"I told her I had betrayed her."
"Why?"
"Because the real betrayal came from someone else."
"Who?"
Elena looked toward the door.
"Your mother."
Leo went still.
"My mother?"
Elena nodded.
"She was the one who gave Marcus the location."
Leo's face became blank.
"That's impossible."
"She believed she was saving Adrian."
"She knew he was alive?"
"Yes."
"Then why did she tell Marcus?"
"Because Marcus threatened to kill Adrian."
Leo's eyes closed.
Another piece.
Another lie.
Another betrayal.
Then Elena whispered:
"Your mother regretted it."
"She tried to fix it."
"She failed."
"How?"
Elena looked at Beatrice.
"She took Lily."
Beatrice's face changed.
"Why?"
"To use Lily as leverage."
Leo's heart stopped.
"Against whom?"
May you like
Elena looked directly at him.
"Against you."
