Chapter 5 - THE FIRST HEARING

The courthouse steps were crowded before sunrise.
Reporters shouted questions as Nora emerged from Charles’s car.
“Mrs. Hale, did you attack Celeste Arden?”
“Are you seeking full custody?”
“Did your husband steal from the Whitmore trust?”
Charles placed himself between Nora and the cameras.
Nora carried her arm in a sling.
The bruise on her wrist was visible.
She did not answer.
Inside the courtroom, Daniel sat beside Preston Shaw.
He wore a dark navy suit and the expression of a concerned father.
Celeste was nowhere to be seen.
The custody hearing began with Shaw describing Nora as emotionally unstable.
He presented photographs of overturned furniture from the gala.
He referenced her postpartum anxiety.
He claimed Charles had exploited a family crisis to seize control of Whitmore Hospitality.
Then Nora’s attorney, Evelyn Grant, stood.
Evelyn had spent twenty-five years handling high-profile custody cases.
She spoke without drama.
“My client is not asking this court to decide a marriage today.”
“She is asking the court to protect a five-year-old child from a father who placed her in the path of a planned confrontation, coached her to lie and then watched while his companion struck her.”
Shaw objected.
The judge overruled him.
Evelyn submitted Owen’s video.
The courtroom watched in silence.
The slap echoed through the speakers.
Daniel did not look at the screen.
Then came his own voice.
“You both deserved it.”
The judge’s expression changed.
Shaw stood.
“The recording lacks context.”
Evelyn turned toward him.
“What context makes that statement acceptable?”
Shaw had no answer.
Next came the technician’s work order and the email from Celeste’s company.
Then Detective Ramirez described the documents found in Daniel’s office.
Shaw objected repeatedly.
The judge permitted limited testimony because the investigation was ongoing.
Finally, Dr. Cole summarized Lucy’s forensic interview.
She did not reveal unnecessary details.
She explained that Lucy independently described Daniel instructing her to stand near the dessert table and telling her what to say if police questioned her.
Daniel’s performance of calm concern began to crack.
He whispered angrily to Shaw.
The judge noticed.
“Mr. Hale, is there something you wish to say?”
Daniel stood.
“Yes, Your Honor.”
Shaw pulled at his sleeve.
Daniel ignored him.
“My wife has turned my daughter against me.”
Nora stared at him.
“She has used her father’s money to influence witnesses, police officers and medical personnel.”
Charles remained motionless.
Daniel continued.
“I love my daughter.”
Evelyn rose.
“Then why did you call her ‘that child’ while she was bleeding?”
Daniel’s face hardened.
“I was under stress.”
“Why did you tell her to stand near Celeste?”
“I did not.”
“Why was the security system programmed to record only Nora’s reaction?”
“I knew nothing about that.”
“Why did investigators find forged documents containing your daughter’s signature?”
“I have never forged anything.”
“Why was forty-three million dollars transferred into companies connected to Celeste Arden?”
Shaw stood.
“My client will invoke his right against self-incrimination regarding any unrelated financial investigation.”
Evelyn looked at the judge.
“The financial investigation is not unrelated.”
The judge called a recess.
Nora waited in a private room.
Her hands would not stop trembling.
Charles poured her water.
“You do not have to be strong every second.”
“I should have protected Lucy sooner.”
“You are protecting her now.”
“What if he convinces the judge I’m unstable?”
“He won’t.”
“You don’t know that.”
Charles sat across from her.
“Nora, being afraid does not make you unstable.”
“Crying does not make you unstable.”
“Trusting the wrong person does not make you unstable.”
“What he did belongs to him.”
“Do not carry it for him.”
When court resumed, the judge issued her ruling.
Daniel’s visitation was suspended.
Nora received temporary sole physical and legal custody.
A guardian ad litem would be appointed for Lucy.
Daniel was ordered to surrender his passport and remain away from Nora, Lucy and the Whitmore estate.
The judge also extended the protective order for six months.
Daniel showed no reaction until the judge mentioned supervised contact.
“If visitation resumes,” she said, “it will occur only after a psychological assessment and subject to the criminal investigation.”
Daniel stood.
“You cannot erase me from my daughter’s life based on one video.”
The judge looked at him.
“I am not erasing you.”
“I am responding to your own actions.”
Outside the courtroom, reporters surged forward.
Daniel left through a side exit.
Nora and Charles returned to the estate.
For the first time in days, Lucy laughed while feeding ducks near the pond.
Nora watched from the terrace.
A sense of relief began to emerge.
It lasted less than an hour.
Elias approached Charles carrying his phone.
“We have a problem.”
“What happened?”
“Celeste disappeared.”
Nora turned.
“What do you mean?”
“She checked out of her hotel before dawn.”
“Where did she go?”
“We don’t know.”
Elias handed Charles a printed email.
It had been sent to Nora fifteen minutes earlier from an encrypted address.
There was no message.
Only an attachment.
Nora opened it.
The file contained twenty photographs.
Daniel entering Celeste’s apartment.
Daniel transferring envelopes.
Daniel meeting the security technician.
Daniel kissing Celeste.
The final image showed Daniel standing beside Lucy’s bed while she slept.
He was holding a syringe.
Nora’s blood ran cold.

Beneath the photograph was one sentence.
Daniel is not the only person you should fear.
