Chapter 10 - THE NIGHT EVELYN DIED

Charles dismissed the security team from the archive.
Only Nora remained.
Rain pressed softly against the windows.
“What happened the night Mom died?” she asked.
Charles sat at the long table.
“Your mother was in pain.”
“I know.”
“The doctors believed she had several days.”
“But she died that night.”
“Yes.”
Nora waited.
Charles folded his hands.
“Evelyn asked everyone to leave the room.”
“She wanted to speak with me alone.”
“What did she say?”
“She told me the company was poisoning our family.”
“She wanted the shares placed directly in your name when you turned twenty-one.”
Nora stared at the altered will.
“That matches the original page?”
“Yes.”
“She made me promise I would not interfere with your life.”
Charles’s voice became quieter.
“I promised.”
“And then?”
“She asked me to increase her medication.”
Nora stopped breathing.
Charles looked toward the window.
“The doctor had authorized a dose within a certain range.”
“She was suffering.”
“I gave the maximum permitted dose.”
“Did it kill her?”
“I don’t know.”
Nora’s eyes filled.
“You don’t know?”
“She died forty minutes later.”
Charles had carried the guilt for sixteen years.
Thomas Hale knew.
He had entered the room shortly after Evelyn died and seen the medication vial.
He threatened to accuse Charles of intentionally ending her life unless Charles allowed him greater access to the company.
Charles refused.
Thomas altered Evelyn’s will to keep the shares under Charles’s control, then used the suspicious change as leverage.
“If I exposed him,” Charles said, “he would expose me.”
“So you stayed silent.”
“I told myself the change protected you until I could prove what Thomas had done.”
“You never proved it.”
“No.”
“And Daniel found out.”
“Thomas must have told him.”
Nora stood.
“My entire marriage was built on a lie created by two men who wanted control.”
Charles did not defend himself.
“I should have told you.”
“When?”
“Every day since it happened.”
Nora walked out.
She spent the night beside Lucy.
The child slept with her hand wrapped around Nora’s finger.
At dawn, Nora made a decision.
Secrets had protected Daniel for years.
She would not protect Charles with another one.
She asked Detective Ramirez to reopen Evelyn’s medical file.
Charles cooperated.
He surrendered the medication records and provided a sworn statement.
The original physician, now retired, confirmed that Charles had administered a legal dosage.
Evelyn’s death had been expected.
There was no evidence of wrongdoing.
But the truth became public after a courthouse clerk leaked the inquiry.
Headlines accused Charles of mercy killing his wife.
Whitmore Holdings stock fell.
Board members demanded his resignation.
Daniel’s strategy became clear.
Even from jail, he was attacking the foundation beneath Nora.
If Charles lost control of the company, the trust would become vulnerable.
At an emergency board meeting, Charles offered to step aside temporarily.
Nora entered the room before the vote.
She wore a dark suit and no jewelry.
Several directors looked surprised.
Most had not seen her in years.
“I object,” Nora said.
A senior director frowned.
“You are not a sitting board member.”
“I am the beneficial owner of twenty-eight percent of this company.”
“Your voting rights remain in trust.”
“The trust document was altered through fraud.”
The room erupted.
Nora placed the forensic report on the table.
She also presented the original draft found in Evelyn’s attorney’s archived files.
The original terms transferred voting control to Nora at twenty-one.
The altered page had unlawfully delayed that transfer.
Nora petitioned the court for immediate recognition of her rights.
Until the court ruled, she requested an injunction preventing any leadership changes.
The judge granted it within hours.
For the first time, Nora held power independent of Daniel and Charles.
She used it immediately.
She ordered a complete investigation into every transaction involving Daniel, Thomas Hale and Arden Developments.
She froze executive bonuses.
She suspended three directors linked to Daniel’s shell companies.
Then she called a press conference.
Charles warned her.
“You do not have to expose our family.”
Nora looked at him.
“Our family was damaged by what we hid.”
At the podium, Nora did not discuss rumors.
She spoke in facts.
“My daughter was assaulted.”
“My husband used her in an attempt to create false evidence against me.”
“He is under investigation for financial crimes and conspiracy.”
“My mother’s estate documents were altered.”
“My father has voluntarily provided information regarding every decision made on the night she died.”
“No person in this family is above scrutiny.”
“Not Daniel.”
“Not Charles.”
“Not me.”
The statement changed public opinion.
People expected another wealthy family to hide behind lawyers.
Nora did the opposite.
Whitmore shares began recovering.
Daniel watched the press conference from jail.
According to a guard, he threw a chair against the wall.
That afternoon, investigators unlocked Daniel’s voice-protected drive.
They used a recording of his wedding toast.
“I choose the empire.”
The drive opened.
Inside were bank records, blackmail files and surveillance folders covering dozens of executives.
Daniel had planned to seize Whitmore Holdings after Charles’s death.
But one folder mattered more.
It was labeled THOMAS.
The most recent file had been uploaded two days earlier.
It contained a video call.
Thomas Hale appeared on the screen.
Older.
Gray-haired.
Very much alive.
He spoke from a room overlooking the ocean.
“We are running out of time,” Thomas said.
Daniel answered.
“Once I control Lucy, the trust is ours.”
“And Nora?”
“She will not be a problem after the gala.”
Thomas leaned closer.
“Do not underestimate Charles.”
Daniel smiled.
“I’m not.”
“I’m giving him a choice.”
“What choice?”
“His company or his daughter.”
The call ended.
Metadata placed Thomas Hale in the Cayman Islands.
But the investigators found something else.
A private jet registered to one of Daniel’s companies had left the Cayman Islands that morning.
May you like
Its destination was New York.
Thomas Hale was coming back.
