Chapter 8 — Nathan Learns the Truth

Michael stood in the mist with the red ledger pressed against his chest.

Claire could not stop looking at him.

He was perhaps thirty-nine.

Close enough to her age to make the resemblance unmistakable.

Same eyes.

Same shape of the jaw.

Same quiet intensity.

But there was something different.

A sadness Claire recognized immediately.

It was the sadness of someone who had spent a lifetime being told that he did not belong anywhere.

Nathan stepped forward.

“Michael.”

Michael looked at him.

“Do I know you?”

Nathan swallowed.

“No.”

Michael smiled.

“You should.”

Nathan's expression tightened.

“Why?”

“Because your father raised me.”

Nathan went completely still.

Claire looked at Nathan.

“You knew.”

“No.”

Michael laughed softly.

“He didn't.”

Nathan shook his head.

“I swear.”

Michael looked at him.

“You're exactly like him.”

“Like who?”

“Arthur.”

Nathan's face hardened.

“You never knew my father.”

“I knew enough.”

Claire stepped between them.

“Stop.”

Both men looked at her.

She stared at Michael.

“Why did you tell me not to trust Nathan?”

Michael looked at her.

“Because I was told he was responsible for everything.”

“By Nathaniel?”

“Yes.”

Claire nodded.

“And now?”

Michael's expression changed.

“Now I'm not sure.”

Nathan stepped closer.

“What did they tell you?”

Michael looked away.

“That you stole my inheritance.”

“You don't have an inheritance.”

Michael laughed.

“That is what they wanted me to believe.”

Claire looked at the ledger.

“Give me that.”

Michael tightened his grip.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because it contains the truth.”

“I need the truth.”

“So do I.”

Nathaniel Cross stepped forward.

His voice was calm.

“You're both making a mistake.”

Claire turned.

“Where is Vivienne?”

Nathaniel smiled.

“Safe.”

“Where?”

“She is no longer important.”

Claire's face hardened.

“You said she was your daughter.”

“She is.”

“Then why did you leave her?”

“Because she failed.”

Claire felt a chill.

“Failed at what?”

Nathaniel looked at her.

“Keeping you ignorant.”

Michael stepped forward.

“You told me Claire was dead.”

Nathaniel's expression changed.

“I protected you.”

“You lied.”

“I gave you a life.”

“You gave me a prison.”

Nathaniel's smile disappeared.

“You would have been killed.”

Michael laughed bitterly.

“By whom?”

Nathaniel looked at Claire.

“Her.”

Claire stared.

“What?”

Nathaniel pointed at her.

“Your existence was the threat.”

Claire shook her head.

“No.”

“You were the legal heir.”

“To what?”

“The Blackwood trust.”

Nathan's eyes narrowed.

“What trust?”

Nathaniel looked at him.

“The trust that controls Archer Meridian.”

Claire finally understood.

The company had never been the real prize.

It was only the public face.

The Blackwood trust was the hidden foundation.

Whoever controlled it controlled everything.

Michael held up the ledger.

“And this proves it.”

Nathaniel nodded.

“Yes.”

Claire stared at him.

“Then why did you hide it?”

“Because if the truth came out forty years ago, hundreds of people would have gone to prison.”

“People deserved prison.”

“Perhaps.”

Nathaniel looked at her.

“But governments collapse when too many secrets are exposed at once.”

Claire stared at him.

“That is your excuse?”

“No.”

He looked toward the mountains.

“It's my explanation.”

Nathan raised his weapon.

“Where is Vivienne?”

Nathaniel sighed.

“You still care about her.”

“She is my fiancée.”

“Was.”

Nathan's jaw tightened.

“Where is she?”

Nathaniel looked at Claire.

“She is in the old Cross estate.”

Claire's eyes narrowed.

“Why?”

“Because she knows where Arthur's original confession is.”

Arthur stepped forward.

“What confession?”

Nathaniel looked at him.

“The one you wrote before you disappeared.”

Arthur went pale.

Nathaniel smiled.

“You remember.”

Claire looked at her father.

“What confession?”

Arthur remained silent.

Claire stepped closer.

“Dad.”

The word escaped before she could stop it.

Arthur's eyes filled with tears.

Claire saw him react.

For a second, he looked like a man hearing his own name after a lifetime of silence.

He whispered,

“Say it again.”

Claire swallowed.

“Dad.”

Arthur closed his eyes.

Nathaniel watched them.

Then he said,

“How touching.”

Victor raised his weapon.

“Enough.”

Nathaniel laughed.

“You still think guns solve things.”

Victor's expression hardened.

“No.”

He lowered the weapon.

“But sometimes they stop people from talking too much.”

Nathaniel smiled.

“You haven't changed.”

Victor stepped forward.

“Neither have you.”

Nathaniel looked at Michael.

“Come with me.”

Michael didn't move.

“You promised me the truth.”

“I gave it to you.”

“You gave me lies.”

Nathaniel's expression became cold.

“I gave you purpose.”

Michael shook his head.

“You gave me hate.”

Claire looked at Michael.

“What happened to you?”

He looked at her.

“I grew up believing you had taken everything from me.”

“I didn't even know you existed.”

“I know.”

“And you hated me?”

“For years.”

“What changed?”

Michael looked at Nathan.

“Your brother.”

Nathan frowned.

“My brother?”

“Arthur's other son.”

Claire's eyes widened.

“What?”

Michael looked at her.

“There was another child.”

Silence.

Arthur's face changed.

Victor looked stunned.

Nathaniel smiled.

Claire whispered,

“How many children were there?”

Michael shook his head.

“That's what they wanted you to believe.”

He opened the ledger.

“The truth is worse.”

Inside was a family tree.

Not three children.

Four.

Arthur's name connected to Evelyn.

Then beneath them:

Claire.

Michael.

And another name.

Daniel Archer.

Nathan stared.

“Daniel.”

Michael nodded.

“Your father's firstborn.”

Nathan shook his head.

“My father had no other son.”

“He did.”

“When?”

“Before you were born.”

Nathan stepped backward.

Claire looked at Arthur.

“Is this true?”

Arthur's face was destroyed by grief.

“Yes.”

Nathan stared at him.

“You had another son?”

Arthur nodded.

“What happened?”

Arthur whispered,

“He died.”

Michael shook his head.

“No.”

Arthur looked at him.

Michael continued.

“He didn't die.”

Nathan stared.

“Where is he?”

Michael looked toward Nathaniel.

“Ask him.”

Nathan turned.

“What did you do?”

Nathaniel smiled.

“Nothing.”

Michael laughed.

“You know where Daniel is.”

Nathan grabbed Nathaniel by the collar.

“Where?”

Nathaniel didn't resist.

“He's closer than you think.”

Claire stepped forward.

“Who is Daniel?”

Nathaniel looked at her.

“Someone you already know.”

Claire's blood ran cold.

“No.”

Nathaniel smiled.

“Yes.”

He looked toward Nathan.

“Your brother is the reason this entire family survived.”

Nathan shook his head.

“That's impossible.”

Nathaniel's expression softened.

“Is it?”

He pointed toward the road.

A second vehicle arrived.

The door opened.

A man stepped out.

Thirty-something.

Dark hair.

A familiar face.

Nathan stared.

“Daniel?”

The man looked at him.

“Yes.”

Nathan couldn't move.

Arthur stepped forward.

“Daniel.”

The man stared at him.

“I've waited a long time to hear you say my name.”

Arthur's eyes filled with tears.

Nathan looked between them.

“You're my brother.”

Daniel nodded.

Claire stared.

Another secret.

Another child.

Another life stolen.

She turned toward Michael.

“You knew?”

Michael nodded.

“I found him three years ago.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because he didn't trust you.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“I trusted nobody.”

Nathan looked at him.

“Why?”

Daniel's expression was cold.

“Because your father taught me that family was the most dangerous word in the world.”

Arthur lowered his head.

“I was trying to protect you.”

“You abandoned me.”

“I thought you were dead.”

“You believed the same lie twice.”

Arthur had no answer.

Claire stepped toward Daniel.

“Who raised you?”

Daniel looked at her.

“Richard.”

Claire's blood ran cold.

“Richard Archer?”

“Yes.”

Nathan whispered,

“Then you're the heir he wanted.”

Daniel nodded.

“Exactly.”

Michael stepped closer.

“And now you understand.”

Nathan looked at him.

“Understand what?”

“The Circle didn't want one heir.”

“They wanted four.”

Claire frowned.

“Why?”

Michael pointed at the family tree.

“Because the Blackwood trust was divided.”

“Four bloodlines.”

“Four signatures.”

“Four heirs.”

Claire stared.

“So the company could never be controlled by one person.”

Michael nodded.

“Unless someone eliminated the others.”

Nathan finally understood.

“That is what Richard has been doing.”

“Yes.”

Nathaniel laughed.

“No.”

Everyone looked at him.

He continued,

“Richard isn't the one controlling this anymore.”

Claire stepped closer.

“Then who is?”

Nathaniel smiled.

“The person who inherited the Circle after Richard.”

Victor's face changed.

“That's impossible.”

“Why?”

“Because the Circle died.”

Nathaniel shook his head.

“You only killed the people you could see.”

Claire looked at him.

“Who leads it?”

Nathaniel didn't answer.

Instead, he pulled out his phone.

He showed them a photograph.

Claire stared.

The image showed a young man standing beside Arthur.

Then she recognized him.

Her heart stopped.

It was Elias Archer.

But not the old Elias.

A much younger Elias.

And beside him stood a woman.

Evelyn.

Claire stared.

“What am I looking at?”

Nathaniel smiled.

“The beginning.”

He enlarged the photograph.

Behind Elias and Evelyn stood another person.

A man whose face had been partially hidden.

Nathan spoke quietly.

“That's the man who ordered your mother's death.”

Claire looked closer.

She knew that face.

She had seen it at the Archer estate.

In the family portraits.

In photographs.

In every room.

She turned toward Arthur.

“Who is he?”

Arthur couldn't speak.

Elias's voice came through the phone.

Nathaniel had called him.

The old man's voice was shaking.

“Claire…”

She answered.

“Who is the man in the photograph?”

Silence.

Then Elias whispered,

“My father.”

Claire froze.

Nathan stared.

“Your great-great-grandfather?”

“No.”

Elias's voice broke.

“My brother.”

Claire looked at Daniel.

Then Michael.

Then Nathan.

Four heirs.

Four stolen lives.

One family secret.

And a man who had been dead for generations—at least according to the official records.

Nathaniel ended the call.

Then he looked at Claire.

“You want to know why your grandfather spent forty years hiding?”

Claire nodded.

Nathaniel said,

“Because Richard wasn't the beginning.”

“He was the grandson.”

“And the man who started everything…”

He pointed toward the photograph.

“…was Elias Archer's brother.”

Claire stared.

“What was his name?”

Nathaniel's expression became unreadable.

“Jonathan Archer.”

Victor stepped backward.

“No.”

Nathaniel looked at him.

“You know the name.”

Victor whispered,

“He died in 1979.”

Nathaniel smiled.

“That's what the records say.”

Claire felt a terrible realization forming.

“If he's alive…”

Nathaniel interrupted.

“He isn't.”

“Then why are you afraid?”

Nathaniel looked toward the forest.

“Because Jonathan Archer didn't need to survive.”

Claire frowned.

“What do you mean?”

“He created a system.”

“A system that could survive him.”

Nathan closed his eyes.

The truth was becoming larger than any person.

Larger than Richard.

Larger than Victor.

Larger than Nathaniel.

The Blackwood Circle wasn't one man.

It was an inheritance.

A machine built to pass from generation to generation.

And someone had inherited it.

Nathaniel looked at Claire.

“You're not fighting Richard anymore.”

“Then who?”

Nathaniel answered:

“Your father's first son.”

Daniel froze.

Claire turned toward him.

Daniel looked horrified.

“I don't know what he's talking about.”

Nathaniel smiled.

“You will.”

Then he raised his phone.

A live video appeared.

A man sat inside a dark room.

His face was hidden.

But his voice was unmistakable.

Claire heard it.

And immediately recognized it.

The voice belonged to the man who had spoken through the ballroom screens.

The man who had threatened her.

The man who had orchestrated every step.

He spoke slowly.

“Hello, Claire.”

The camera moved closer.

A scar appeared above his left eyebrow.

Claire's heart stopped.

Victor stepped forward.

“That isn't possible.”

The man smiled.

Then he removed the disguise.

The face beneath it was older.

Scarred.

But unmistakable.

Victor whispered,

“Richard.”

Richard Archer looked directly into the camera.

“You've spent forty years looking for the wrong villain.”

Claire stared.

Richard smiled.

“The real betrayal hasn't happened yet.”

The screen went black.

Nathaniel looked at Claire.

“Now you understand why you were brought here.”

Claire shook her head.

“No.”

She looked at the four men around her.

“I understand something else.”

“What?”

Claire picked up the red ledger.

“They're afraid of me.”

Nathaniel smiled.

“For the first time…”

May you like

Claire's eyes hardened.

“…they should be.”
