Chapter 7 — The Woman in the Red Coat

Richard Archer stood beneath the cold fluorescent lights of the underground archive.

For forty years, Claire had heard his name spoken as though it belonged to a ghost.

Now the ghost was standing six feet away.

Alive.

Older.

Calm.

And smiling.

Behind him stood Arthur.

Claire stared at her father.

She had imagined this moment thousands of times without knowing she was imagining it.

As a child, she had wondered what her father looked like.

Whether he had her eyes.

Whether he would have held her.

Whether he had ever loved her.

She had spent years telling herself that none of those questions mattered.

Now Arthur was standing in front of her with a gun in his hand.

And he looked more broken than dangerous.

“Claire,” he whispered.

She couldn't answer.

Nathan stood beside her.

His weapon remained raised.

Richard glanced at it.

“You really are your grandfather's grandson.”

Nathan's expression hardened.

“Put your hands where I can see them.”

Richard smiled.

“Still giving orders.”

“I'm not asking.”

Arthur spoke quietly.

“Nathan.”

Nathan looked at him.

“Dad?”

Arthur's eyes filled with pain.

“Lower the gun.”

“Why?”

“Because Richard will kill Elias.”

Richard laughed.

“Your father still believes I'm capable of mercy.”

Claire finally found her voice.

“Why?”

Richard looked at her.

“Why what?”

“Why are you doing this?”

Richard walked slowly toward the table.

“Because forty years ago, your grandfather stole something from my family.”

Claire shook her head.

“You stole Archer Meridian.”

“No.”

Richard tapped the red ledger.

“I reclaimed what was always mine.”

Nathan laughed bitterly.

“You forged documents.”

“Documents can be corrected.”

“You murdered people.”

Richard's smile disappeared.

“People die.”

Claire stepped forward.

“My mother.”

Richard looked at her.

For the first time, something changed in his expression.

Not guilt.

Recognition.

“Evelyn.”

Claire's hands tightened.

“You remember her.”

“Of course.”

“Then tell me what happened.”

Richard looked at Arthur.

Arthur closed his eyes.

Richard said,

“She chose the wrong man.”

Claire stared.

“She loved Arthur.”

“She loved Silas.”

“No.”

Richard smiled.

“She loved the truth.”

The words confused Claire.

“What truth?”

Richard walked toward the old photographs.

“Your mother discovered that Archer Meridian wasn't merely a company.”

Claire waited.

“It was a shield.”

“For what?”

“For people like us.”

Nathan frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Richard turned.

“Your family thinks money created power.”

“It didn't.”

“Power created money.”

He pointed toward the shelves.

“Those documents aren't business records.”

“They're evidence of influence.”

“Politicians.”

“Judges.”

“Police.”

“Banks.”

“Governments.”

Claire stared.

“You were all connected.”

Richard nodded.

“The Blackwood Circle wasn't a company.”

“It was a network.”

“And Archer Meridian was the vehicle.”

Claire looked at Arthur.

“Did you know?”

Arthur whispered,

“Yes.”

“Did you join them?”

“No.”

Richard laughed.

“You always were a terrible liar.”

Arthur's eyes hardened.

“I joined to destroy them.”

Silence.

Richard stared at him.

“You joined because Evelyn was pregnant.”

Claire froze.

Richard continued.

“You were terrified of losing her.”

Arthur looked down.

“And you believed you could protect her.”

Arthur whispered,

“I tried.”

“You failed.”

Claire looked between them.

“What happened the night she died?”

Richard's smile vanished.

“She found the ledger.”

“The real one?”

“Yes.”

“She planned to expose everyone.”

Claire nodded.

“And you stopped her.”

“No.”

Richard looked at Arthur.

“He did.”

Claire's heart stopped.

Arthur immediately shook his head.

“No.”

Richard continued.

“Arthur took Evelyn to Blackwood.”

“He intended to hide her.”

“But someone betrayed him.”

“Who?”

Richard smiled.

“Victor.”

Claire looked at Victor.

He remained silent.

Richard said,

“Victor believed the safest place for the children was away from all of us.”

“So he took Michael.”

Claire whispered,

“And me?”

Richard's eyes moved to her.

“You were supposed to die.”

Nathan stepped forward.

“What?”

Richard looked at him.

“The Circle wanted the Archer bloodline eliminated.”

“Why?”

“Because Arthur was preparing to expose us.”

Claire stared at Arthur.

“My father tried to expose the Circle?”

“Yes.”

Richard smiled.

“And that is why he lost everything.”

Claire looked at her father.

Arthur's eyes were full of tears.

“I couldn't save your mother.”

Claire's voice cracked.

“Why didn't you save me?”

“I tried.”

“You failed.”

“Yes.”

The answer was so simple that it hurt more than any excuse.

Arthur lowered his weapon.

“I thought I had lost both of you.”

Claire stared.

“You thought I was dead.”

“Yes.”

“Who told you?”

Richard answered.

“I did.”

Claire turned toward him.

“You lied.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because dead children are easier to control than living heirs.”

Claire felt sick.

Nathan stared at Richard.

“What happened to Michael?”

Richard looked at him.

“You want to know?”

“Yes.”

“He was raised under another name.”

“Where?”

Richard smiled.

“You're asking the wrong question.”

Claire stepped closer.

“Then what should I ask?”

Richard looked directly at her.

“Who raised him?”

Claire's heart raced.

“Who?”

Richard didn't answer.

Instead, he looked toward Arthur.

“Tell her.”

Arthur remained silent.

Richard's expression hardened.

“Tell your daughter.”

Arthur finally spoke.

“Michael was raised by Nathaniel Cross.”

Nathan froze.

“Vivienne's father?”

Arthur nodded.

“Why?”

“Because Nathaniel was loyal to the Circle.”

Claire stared.

“He raised my brother?”

“Yes.”

“Then why would he?”

“Because Michael was valuable.”

Claire frowned.

“How?”

Arthur looked at Nathan.

“Michael wasn't just your brother.”

“He was the only living person who could inherit the Bennett controlling shares.”

Nathan stared.

“But Claire can inherit them too.”

Arthur shook his head.

“Not anymore.”

Claire's heart dropped.

“Why?”

Arthur looked at Richard.

Richard answered.

“Because the law was changed.”

“When?”

“After your mother died.”

“By whom?”

“Elias.”

Claire turned toward Elias.

The old man looked devastated.

“I had no choice.”

Richard laughed.

“You always have a choice.”

Claire looked at Elias.

“What did you do?”

Elias whispered,

“I transferred the voting rights.”

“To Michael?”

“No.”

“To Nathan.”

Nathan froze.

“What?”

Elias looked at him.

“Your father named you as the successor.”

Claire stared.

“But why?”

“Because Arthur believed you could protect the company.”

Richard smiled.

“And that is why Michael was raised to hate you.”

Nathan's expression changed.

“What did they tell him?”

“That you stole his inheritance.”

Claire looked at Nathan.

“And did you know?”

“No.”

“You swear?”

Nathan looked directly into her eyes.

“I swear.”

Richard laughed.

“You two are wasting time.”

He pulled out a gun.

Claire stepped back.

Arthur moved immediately.

“Richard.”

Richard pointed the gun at Claire.

“Enough.”

Arthur raised his weapon.

“Don't.”

Richard smiled.

“You still care about her.”

“She is my daughter.”

“And Evelyn's.”

Richard's face became cold.

“That is exactly why she cannot live.”

A gunshot exploded.

But Richard wasn't the one who fired.

Victor did.

The bullet struck Richard's shoulder.

He stumbled.

Nathan rushed forward.

Arthur grabbed Claire.

“Run!”

Richard fell behind the table.

Victor fired again.

But Richard disappeared through a hidden doorway.

Claire stared.

“He escaped.”

Victor nodded.

“He always does.”

Nathan looked at Arthur.

“Why did you let him live?”

Arthur looked exhausted.

“Because I spent forty years trying to prove I wasn't him.”

Claire looked at her father.

“What happened to my mother?”

Arthur's eyes filled with tears.

“I held her when she died.”

Claire couldn't breathe.

“She asked about you.”

“What did she say?”

Arthur looked at Claire.

“She said…”

His voice broke.

“Tell Claire I loved her before I ever saw her face.”

Claire closed her eyes.

For forty years, she had believed she was unwanted.

Now she knew that wasn't true.

Her mother had loved her.

Her father had loved her.

They had simply been defeated.

Not by lack of love.

By people who understood that fear could be stronger than love.

Victor stepped closer.

“We have to leave.”

Nathan looked at him.

“Why?”

Victor pointed toward the tunnel.

“Because Richard wasn't alone.”

Claire heard footsteps.

Dozens.

Then the archive lights went red.

An alarm began to sound.

Victor grabbed Claire.

“Move.”

They ran.

They reached the surface just before dawn.

The valley was covered in mist.

Claire stopped near the river.

Nathan stood beside her.

Arthur remained behind them.

Victor watched the forest.

Claire looked at Arthur.

“Where is Michael?”

Arthur's face fell.

“I don't know.”

“You're his father.”

“I know.”

“Then find him.”

Arthur nodded.

“I will.”

Claire looked at Victor.

“And you?”

Victor looked toward the mountains.

“I've been searching for him for forty years.”

Claire swallowed.

“Then we search together.”

Victor stared at her.

For the first time, he looked like a father rather than a fugitive.

He nodded.

“Together.”

Nathan stepped forward.

“We have another problem.”

Claire turned.

“What?”

He held up a phone.

“Vivienne.”

Claire's heart tightened.

“What about her?”

“She sent another message.”

He showed Claire the screen.

MY FATHER IS COMING FOR YOU.

A second message appeared.

AND HE KNOWS WHERE MICHAEL IS.

Claire looked toward the road.

The mist began to lift.

A black SUV appeared in the distance.

Victor's face hardened.

“That's Nathaniel Cross.”

Nathan raised his weapon.

Victor stopped him.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because if Nathaniel is here…”

Victor looked at Claire.

“…then Michael isn't far away.”

The SUV stopped.

The driver's door opened.

But Nathaniel Cross wasn't behind the wheel.

A young man stepped out.

Dark hair.

Gray eyes.

A silver bracelet around his wrist.

Claire stared.

Her breath disappeared.

She knew that face.

She had seen it in the photograph.

The young man looked at her.

Then smiled.

“Hello, Claire.”

Victor whispered,

“Michael.”

Claire couldn't move.

Her brother had finally come home.

But he wasn't alone.

May you like

Behind him stood Nathaniel Cross.

And Nathaniel was holding the red ledger.
