Chapter 2 – The Locked Basement

The ambulance had barely disappeared beyond the mansion gates when Alejandro turned back toward the house.
Rain still lashed against the windows.
Lightning illuminated the estate for a split second, making the Castillo mansion look less like a home and more like a prison.
His prison.
For three years.
He clenched his fists until his knuckles turned white.
How had he searched half the world for his wife...
While she had been trapped beneath the roof they once built together?
The question burned inside him.
Blackstone Security arrived exactly twelve minutes later.
Within minutes, every entrance was sealed.
Every employee surrendered their phones.
No one was allowed to leave.
Not even Vivian.
She sat calmly in the library, sipping another glass of wine as if nothing had happened.
"You know," she said with a faint smile, "you're making a terrible mistake."
Alejandro stood across from her.
"No."
He placed Elena's wedding ring on the table between them.
"This was hidden inside a servant's locker."
Vivian glanced at it without changing expression.
"So?"
"My wife disappeared wearing this ring."
Vivian shrugged.
"Perhaps someone stole it."
Alejandro leaned closer.
"Or perhaps someone forced her to hide it."
For the first time that evening, Vivian remained silent.
Meanwhile...
At St. Gabriel Medical Center, Elena slowly regained consciousness.
Everything felt unfamiliar.
The clean white sheets.
The scent of disinfectant.
The steady rhythm of a heart monitor.
She blinked.
A nurse smiled warmly.
"Mrs. Castillo?"
The name struck her like lightning.
Mrs. Castillo.
Why did it sound so familiar?
Then she saw him.
Alejandro sat beside the bed.
He hadn't changed much.
A few silver strands now lined his dark hair.
The confident billionaire the world admired looked exhausted.
Older.
Broken.
The moment he realized she was awake, tears gathered in his eyes.
He reached toward her cautiously.
"I won't touch you unless you want me to."
His voice trembled.
"I promise."
Elena stared at him.
Something inside her chest tightened.
"I..."
She struggled to speak.
"Do... I know you?"
Alejandro smiled sadly.
"You used to."
The words shattered his own heart.
Back at the mansion...
Marco, Alejandro's head of security, supervised the search room by room.
Nothing unusual appeared at first.
Guest suites.
Storage closets.
Wine cellar.
Archives.
Everything seemed perfectly normal.
Until one guard noticed something strange.
"Sir."
Marco walked over.
"What is it?"
The guard pointed toward the mansion's oldest blueprint hanging inside Alejandro's grandfather's study.
"This wall doesn't line up."
Marco frowned.
"What do you mean?"
"The blueprint shows another corridor behind the wine cellar."
"But it doesn't exist."
Marco immediately radioed the team.
"Bring thermal scanners."
Within minutes, hidden heat signatures appeared behind a thick stone wall.
Someone had built a false wall decades earlier.
Or...
Modified it recently.
Marco called Alejandro immediately.
"We found something."
Thirty minutes later...
Alejandro returned from the hospital.
His clothes were still damp from the storm.
"What did you find?"
Marco pointed toward the wall.
"The original mansion plans don't match the current structure."
Alejandro ran his hand across the cold stone.
Then he noticed tiny scratch marks near one section.
As though it had been opened repeatedly.
"Move."
Four guards pushed together.
Nothing happened.
Another joined.
Still nothing.
Finally, one guard noticed an iron candle holder mounted beside the fireplace.
He twisted it.
A deep mechanical rumble echoed underground.
The wall slowly slid sideways.
A cold draft escaped from the darkness beyond.
The servants watching nearby gasped.
Even Vivian's confident expression disappeared.
Alejandro noticed.
"You knew."
"I don't know what you're talking about."
"Really?"
He gestured toward the hidden passage.
"Then why are you afraid?"
She said nothing.
The staircase descended far beneath the mansion.
Each step was coated in dust.
Except...
One narrow path.
Fresh footprints.
Someone had been using it recently.
At the bottom waited a steel security door.
Modern.
Electronic.
Far newer than the century-old mansion itself.
Marco examined the keypad.
"It was wiped remotely."
"Can you open it?"
He smiled.
"Give me five minutes."
It took three.
The lock clicked.
The heavy door creaked open.
A stale smell filled the corridor.
The room beyond looked nothing like a cellar.
It looked like a hospital.
White walls.
Medical cabinets.
Surveillance monitors.
Restraint straps attached to a steel bed.
Alejandro stopped breathing.
"What..."
Marco slowly looked around.
There were shelves filled with medication.
Sedatives.
Memory suppressants.
Psychiatric drugs.
Some bottles were nearly empty.
Others carried dates stretching back three years.
Exactly when Elena disappeared.
Alejandro felt sick.
He picked up one vial.
Dr. Harrison's signature appeared on the prescription label.
"No..."
His voice cracked.
"No..."
Then another guard called out.
"Sir."
Alejandro walked over.
The guard pointed toward dozens of photographs pinned across one wall.
Every picture showed Elena.
Cleaning windows.
Scrubbing floors.
Sleeping on a thin mattress.
Eating alone.
Working in the gardens.
Hundreds of photographs.
Someone had monitored every moment of her life.
Every single day.
For three years.
Alejandro tore one photograph from the wall.
On the back...
Someone had written:
Subject 12
Memory Recovery: 8%
Continue Reinforcement Protocol.
His hands began to shake.
Subject?
Not Elena.
Not Mrs. Castillo.
Subject.
Like a laboratory experiment.
At the hospital...
Elena closed her eyes.
Another memory surfaced.
She was standing in the mansion garden.
Laughing.
Alejandro kissed her forehead.
"You'll always be safe here."
Then...
Everything changed.
Someone approached from behind.
A sweet perfume.
Vivian.
"I made your favorite tea."
Elena smiled.
The memory blurred.
The taste...
Bitter.
Very bitter.
Minutes later...
Darkness.
Hands carrying her.
Voices arguing.
A needle piercing her arm.
Someone whispering.
"The first injection is always the hardest."
Elena suddenly gasped.
Her heart monitor accelerated wildly.
Doctors rushed into the room.
Alejandro immediately stood.
"What happened?"
Elena grabbed his wrist with surprising strength.
Her terrified eyes locked onto his.
"The tea..."
She whispered.
"It was Vivian..."
Then she screamed.
Not from pain.
From memory.
Back inside the hidden underground room...
Marco continued searching.
One cabinet remained locked.
A guard forced it open.
Inside sat dozens of hard drives.
Medical files.
Passports.
Cash.
Fake identities.
And one small leather journal.
Alejandro opened it carefully.
The handwriting belonged to Elena.
The first pages were ordinary.
Shopping lists.
Anniversary plans.
Travel ideas.
Then...
The writing suddenly changed.
The letters became shaky.
Uneven.
Panicked.
Day 14
She says Alejandro stopped looking for me.
Day 39
I don't know if today is real.
Day 103
She keeps making me repeat my new name.
Number Twelve.
Number Twelve.
Number Twelve.
The next several pages contained nothing except those two words.
Written hundreds of times.
As though someone had forced her to erase herself.
Alejandro couldn't hold back his tears.
His wife had never forgotten him willingly.
Someone had tried to erase her.
Page after page.
Memory after memory.
Until Elena herself almost disappeared.
Then Marco found one final item hidden beneath the journal.
A black USB drive.
A handwritten label covered its surface.
Only four words.
Play When He Returns.
Alejandro looked at Marco.
"Set up the monitor."
The screen flickered to life.
Static filled the room.
Then...
A video began to play.
Vivian appeared on the screen.
She looked directly into the camera.
She smiled.
And said the words that would change everything.
"If you're watching this, Alejandro..."
May you like
"...it means I've already lost."
The video continued...
