The gala collapsed within minutes.
Reporters sensed scandal.
Guests whispered behind raised glasses.
Someone quietly uploaded a video of Nolan confronting Grant.
It spread online almost instantly.
Ava felt the atmosphere changing.
People who had smiled at her an hour earlier now stepped away.
Then the hospital's Chief Executive Officer entered the ballroom.
His expression was cold.
"Miss Carlisle."
She smiled confidently.
"Yes?"
"I'm afraid your invitation has been revoked."
She laughed.
"There must be some misunderstanding."
"There isn't."
"You can't remove me."
"I can."
He motioned toward two hospital security officers.
"You knowingly interfered with emergency communication involving a patient in critical condition."
Grant looked shocked.
"Ava..."
She turned toward him.
"Tell them."
But Grant remained silent.
Security stepped beside her.
"Ma'am, this way."
"I am Grant Mercer's guest."
One guard answered calmly.
"Not anymore."
The ballroom became silent as Ava was escorted toward the exit.
Dozens of guests watched.
Several phones recorded every step.
The woman who had entered believing she would replace Emma left through the front doors surrounded by security officers.
Outside, reporters immediately rushed toward her.
"Did you stop Grant Mercer from seeing his wife?"
"Were you having an affair?"
"Did you know Mrs. Mercer was in labor?"
Ava said nothing.
Her silence became tomorrow's headline.
Inside the hospital, Grant finally ran toward the maternity floor.
He reached the operating room just as the red surgical light remained glowing above the doors.
Nolan stood waiting.
"You don't get to walk in now."
Grant stared at him.
"I'm her husband."
Nolan looked him directly in the eye.
"Tonight, you stopped acting like one."
Grant lowered his head.
