Chapter 2 – The Clause That Changed Everything

Chapter 2 – The Clause That Changed Everything

At 2:31 a.m., attorney Nolan Brooks answered his private phone on the second ring.

He never ignored a call from Emma Mercer.

When Nurse Linda spoke four words—

"Activate the Hawthorne Clause."

—he was already grabbing his briefcase.

"I'll be there in fifteen minutes," he replied.

He didn't ask questions.

He didn't need to.

The Hawthorne Clause had been written nearly a year earlier after Emma quietly confessed her fears.

"If my husband ever abandons me or our child during a medical emergency," she had told Nolan, "I want every legal protection available."

At the time, Nolan had hoped the documents would never be used.

Tonight, they would.

Inside the ballroom, Grant finished his speech to thunderous applause.

Donors surrounded him.

Photographers called his name.

Ava accepted every compliment as though she already owned the Mercer empire.

Then the ballroom doors opened.

A tall man in a dark suit walked in carrying a leather portfolio.

Nolan Brooks.

His face remained expressionless as he crossed the room.

"Mr. Mercer."

Grant smiled politely.

"Nolan. I wasn't expecting you."

"I know."

The attorney handed him a sealed envelope.

"You've just been officially removed as your wife's medical representative."

Grant frowned.

"What?"

"The authority now belongs to me under Mrs. Mercer's emergency directive."

Silence spread across the nearby guests.

Ava stepped forward.

"I'm afraid this is inappropriate."

Nolan ignored her completely.

"Mrs. Mercer also instructed me to deliver one additional message."

Grant opened the envelope.

Inside was a single page.

Emma Mercer has initiated the Hawthorne Clause.

His smile disappeared.

"You can't be serious."

"I assure you," Nolan answered calmly, "she is."

Grant suddenly felt the room spinning.

"The baby..."

"Your wife nearly died while your assistant told hospital staff you were unavailable."

Whispers spread through the ballroom.

Every nearby conversation stopped.

Even the photographers lowered their cameras.

For the first time that evening, Grant realized everyone was watching him.

Not as Chicago's most powerful billionaire.

But as a husband who had abandoned his wife.

Emma was already being wheeled toward the operating room.

Her breathing became weaker.

Dr. Monroe leaned over her.

"We're taking you in now."

Emma nodded.

"Save my daughter."

"You have my word."

The operating room doors closed.

Seconds later, every light above the entrance turned red.
