Chapter 2: Quincy Tells the Truth

Chapter 2: Quincy Tells the Truth
The two of them hid inside an abandoned maintenance shed several blocks away.
The newborn slept against Amelia's chest.
Quincy sat quietly on the floor.
Finally he spoke.
"My dad told everyone my mom lost the baby."
Amelia stared at him.
"But I heard her crying."
"I heard the baby crying too."
"They said she died."
"But I saw Grandma carrying a blue blanket."
"The same one."
He pointed at the blanket wrapped around Amelia's daughter.
"I never forgot it."
Amelia's stomach turned.
Her mother-in-law.
The Bible.
The cold expression.
Everything suddenly fit together.
"Why would they do that?"
Quincy shrugged.
"I heard Grandma talking to Dad."
"They said girls only bring weakness."
"They wanted a son."
Amelia felt sick.
Her husband had never celebrated the pregnancy.
He had refused to learn the baby's gender until birth.
Now she understood why.
Police sirens echoed nearby.
Someone had reported a missing patient.
Amelia looked at Quincy.
"Will you help me?"
May you like
The boy nodded.
"I've been waiting seven years."
