Chapter 1: The Blue Blanket

Chapter 1: The Blue Blanket
The cold air behind the hospital burned Amelia's lungs as she ran.
Quincy never looked back.
His small hand gripped hers with surprising strength.
"Hurry," he whispered.
"They'll come."
Behind the medical waste containers sat a blue laundry cart.
It looked ordinary.
Almost invisible.
Quincy pointed toward it.
"There."
Amelia's knees nearly gave out.
Inside the cart, wrapped in a faded blue blanket, lay a tiny baby girl.
Silent.
Motionless.
For one terrifying second Amelia thought she really was too late.
Then...
A tiny finger moved.
"My baby..."
She scooped the infant into her arms.
The little girl let out a weak cry.
Alive.
Barely.
Amelia sobbed as she wrapped her hospital gown around the child.
Footsteps echoed from the loading dock.
Quincy froze.
"They found out."
A security guard stepped outside.
Another nurse followed.
"They're over there!"
Quincy pulled Amelia toward a narrow gate behind the dumpsters.
"I know another way."
"You've been here before?" Amelia asked.
The boy lowered his eyes.
"I wasn't looking for your baby."
"I was looking for my sister."
Amelia stopped walking.
"What?"
May you like
Quincy's voice cracked.
"I used to have one."
