CHAPTER 13 — THE MAN BEHIND THE WALL

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The words remained projected across the wall.

MICHAEL HAWTHORNE — STATUS: ALIVE.

Ethan stared at the screen.

"My father is alive?"

No one answered.

Richard couldn't.

Claire was crying.

Alexander looked like he'd been struck.

Samuel kept staring at the locked door.

Then Ethan asked again.

"Mom?"

Claire finally looked at him.

"I don't know what to tell you."

"But you knew him."

She closed her eyes.

"Yes."

"You loved him."

Claire's lips trembled.

"Yes."

Richard looked away.

There was pain in his eyes, but he forced himself to remain calm.

Ethan looked at him.

"Does that mean you're not my dad?"

Richard knelt in front of him.

"Listen to me."

Ethan's eyes filled with tears.

"I don't care whose blood runs through your veins."

Richard placed both hands on the boy's shoulders.

"You are my son."

"But..."

"No."

His voice was firm.

"You don't become my son because of a piece of paper."

He swallowed.

"You became my son the first time I held you."

Ethan stared at him.

Richard continued.

"And nothing that man says will ever change that."

Ethan suddenly threw his arms around him.

Richard held him tightly.

Across the room, Claire wiped her tears.

Alexander looked down.

Samuel quietly turned away.

For the first time, the adults understood something that the powerful men manipulating them never had.

Ethan didn't need to know which bloodline he belonged to.

He needed to know who would stay.

The door remained locked.

Reed examined the mechanism.

"It's electronically sealed."

Samuel looked at him.

"Can you open it?"

"Not from here."

"Then we're trapped."

Reed shook his head.

"Not exactly."

He pointed toward the wall.

"There has to be another exit."

Victor stepped closer.

"This room was built as a records vault."

"Meaning?"

"Meaning Edward never trusted one door."

Samuel ran his hand along the wall.

"Then find the second one."

Everyone searched.

Ethan stood beside Richard.

He looked at the photographs covering the wall.

Something bothered him.

He walked toward one.

"Wait."

Richard turned.

"What?"

Ethan pointed.

"That's wrong."

Samuel approached.

"What is?"

"The picture."

It showed Michael Hawthorne standing beside Claire.

A baby lay in Claire's arms.

Ethan.

Samuel examined it.

"What about it?"

Ethan pointed to the clock in the background.

"That clock."

Everyone looked.

The time displayed was 3:17.

Ethan shook his head.

"When I was born, Mom told me the hospital clock stopped at 2:46."

Claire stared.

"Yes."

Ethan pointed again.

"So this picture wasn't taken when I was born."

Richard's eyes narrowed.

"After."

"Yes."

Claire stepped closer.

She suddenly noticed something else.

The hospital bracelet on the baby's wrist.

She read the number.

Her face went white.

"That's not Ethan's bracelet."

Richard looked at her.

"What?"

"That's another baby's."

Silence.

Samuel whispered:

"Then who is that?"

Claire shook her head.

"I don't know."

A metallic click came from behind the wall.

Everyone turned.

A section of wood moved.

A narrow passage opened.

Victor smiled grimly.

"I told you."

Richard took Ethan's hand.

"Stay between us."

They entered.

The passage was barely wide enough for two people.

Old pipes ran along the ceiling.

The air smelled of dust and damp stone.

After twenty yards, they reached another room.

This one was filled with filing cabinets.

Reed opened the nearest drawer.

Names.

Hundreds of them.

Children.

Families.

Bank accounts.

Medical records.

Adoption documents.

Richard looked around.

"This isn't a trust archive."

Victor nodded.

"No."

He picked up a file.

"It's a control system."

Claire stared.

"Edward kept information on everyone."

"Not everyone."

Victor looked at the files.

"People who could threaten him."

Samuel found another cabinet.

His expression changed.

"What?"

Richard approached.

Samuel held up a folder.

MICHAEL HAWTHORNE.

Richard opened it.

Inside were photographs.

Michael as a child.

Michael at school.

Michael graduating.

Michael with Claire.

Then the final page.

STATUS: DECEASED.

Samuel frowned.

"Look at the date."

Richard did.

"Twenty-three years ago."

Claire shook her head.

"That's the date Edward claimed he died."

Richard looked at the documents.

"There's no death certificate."

Reed searched the file.

"No autopsy."

"No body?"

"Nothing."

Victor whispered:

"He disappeared."

Richard stared at him.

"Where?"

Victor pointed to another line.

TRANSFERRED — PROJECT EIGHT.

Samuel's expression changed.

"Project Eight."

The same name they'd seen before.

Richard's voice became low.

"What happened to him?"

Victor answered:

"Edward didn't kill Michael."

Claire stared.

"He imprisoned him."

Three floors below the courthouse...

A man sat in a dark room.

His wrists were not tied.

His ankles were not chained.

But the door had no handle on the inside.

He had been there for twenty-three years.

Michael Hawthorne sat beside a narrow window.

He looked older.

Thinner.

His hair was completely gray.

But his eyes remained sharp.

A speaker crackled.

Edward's voice filled the room.

"They found the records."

Michael smiled.

"Of course they did."

"You're not worried?"

"No."

"Why?"

"Because Richard will protect Ethan."

Edward was silent.

Then:

"You still believe in him."

"I know him."

"You barely knew him."

Michael laughed.

"I knew him enough."

Edward's voice became colder.

"You're going to regret what happens next."

Michael stood.

"No."

He looked directly at the camera.

"You are."

Back in the archive, Claire discovered a hidden drawer.

Inside was a cassette recorder.

She pressed play.

Static filled the room.

Then a woman's voice.

Claire's mother.

Her voice was weak.

"If you're hearing this, Edward has failed to erase the truth."

Claire covered her mouth.

"Mom?"

The recording continued.

"Michael did not die."

Claire began crying.

"He was taken."

Richard held her shoulder.

The voice continued.

"Edward believed Michael knew too much about the trust."

A pause.

"He knew about the children."

Claire's face tightened.

"He discovered Project Eight."

The recording became distorted.

Then:

"Most importantly, he discovered who created the genetic clause."

Richard leaned closer.

"Who?"

The woman's voice answered.

"William Bennett."

Everyone froze.

William had created the clause.

Not Edward.

William.

Claire stared.

"Why would my father create it?"

The recording continued.

"Because William believed power should never belong to one family."

"He designed the trust to activate only when a descendant demonstrated something money could not control."

Richard whispered:

"What?"

The recording crackled.

Then the answer came.

"Choice."

Silence.

"Whoever inherits the trust must willingly reject absolute control."

Samuel looked at Ethan.

Claire understood.

"Ethan."

Richard nodded.

"The trust was designed for him."

The recording continued.

"William knew Edward would eventually try to seize the trust."

"So he created one final condition."

Claire leaned closer.

"What condition?"

The voice answered:

"The heir must choose the person who has proven he will protect him without expecting anything in return."

Everyone looked at Ethan.

Ethan stood silently.

Richard knelt beside him.

"You don't have to choose anything."

Ethan looked at him.

"But I already did."

Richard smiled.

"What?"

"You."

Richard's eyes filled with tears.

Samuel looked away.

Even Reed lowered his head.

Then the lights flickered.

The recording stopped.

A door opened at the far end.

Someone stepped through.

Everyone reached for their weapons.

A man stood in the doorway.

Older.

Tall.

Gray-haired.

A scar across his cheek.

Ethan stared.

The man looked at him.

For a moment, neither moved.

Then the man whispered:

"Ethan."

Claire stopped breathing.

She knew that voice.

"Michael."

The man nodded.

"Claire."

She stepped forward.

"You're alive."

Michael smiled sadly.

"Apparently."

She began crying.

Michael looked at Richard.

The two men stared at each other.

Neither spoke.

Finally, Michael said:

"You raised my son."

Richard nodded.

"Yes."

"Thank you."

Richard looked surprised.

"I didn't do it for you."

Michael smiled.

"I know."

He looked at Ethan.

"I came back for him."

Ethan slowly stepped forward.

"Are you my father?"

Michael nodded.

"By blood."

Ethan looked at Richard.

Michael noticed.

He smiled.

"And he is your father by choice."

Richard looked at him.

Michael continued:

"That's why I trust him."

Edward's voice suddenly came through the speaker.

"How touching."

Michael's expression hardened.

"Edward."

The speaker crackled.

"You've ruined everything."

Michael smiled.

"No."

"You were supposed to die."

"You've been trying to kill me for twenty-three years."

"And yet you're still here."

Michael looked toward the ceiling.

"Because you never understood something."

"What?"

"You can lock a man in a room."

"But you can't lock away the truth."

Edward laughed.

"You think truth wins?"

Michael answered:

"Eventually."

The speaker went silent.

Then the building shook.

An explosion rocked the courthouse.

Everyone fell.

Dust filled the air.

Reed shouted:

"Everyone down!"

Another explosion.

The lights died.

Ethan screamed.

Richard grabbed him.

"Stay with me!"

Samuel shouted:

"Claire!"

"I'm here!"

Michael moved through the darkness.

Then a red emergency light came on.

A massive crack had appeared in the wall.

Water began rushing through.

Reed stared.

"The underground tunnel is flooding."

Victor looked toward the exit.

"Edward opened the floodgates."

Richard grabbed Ethan.

"We need out."

Michael nodded.

"This way."

They ran.

The tunnel filled rapidly.

Water reached their ankles.

Then their knees.

Ethan held Richard's hand.

"Dad!"

"I'm here!"

Michael shouted:

"Keep moving!"

The water rose to their waists.

Samuel helped Claire.

Reed supported Victor.

Suddenly, Ethan slipped.

Richard caught him.

"Got you!"

But the current pulled harder.

Richard nearly fell.

Michael grabbed his arm.

The two men locked eyes.

"Don't let go."

Richard nodded.

"I won't."

Together they pulled Ethan free.

They reached a steel ladder.

Michael climbed first.

Then Ethan.

Then Richard.

At the top was an old courtroom storage room.

They collapsed onto the floor.

Everyone breathed heavily.

Ethan looked at Michael.

"You saved Dad."

Michael smiled.

"Of course."

Ethan looked at Richard.

"Dad saved me too."

Michael nodded.

"That's what fathers do."

Outside the courthouse, sirens screamed.

Police vehicles surrounded the building.

Reporters crowded behind barricades.

But nobody knew what had happened underground.

Not yet.

Judge Harrison was rushed into an ambulance.

He was alive.

Before the doors closed, he grabbed Reed's sleeve.

"Edward..."

Reed leaned closer.

"What?"

"He's not the final enemy."

Reed froze.

"Who is?"

Harrison whispered:

"William."

Then the ambulance doors closed.

Across the city, William Bennett watched the courthouse on television.

Edward stood beside him.

"They escaped."

William nodded.

"I expected them to."

Edward looked angry.

"What now?"

William smiled.

"Now we stop chasing them."

"Then what?"

"We make them come to us."

Edward frowned.

"How?"

William looked at a photograph.

Ethan.

Then Claire.

Then Richard.

He placed them side by side.

"Family."

Edward stared.

William continued:

"People will fight for money."

"But they'll die for family."

That evening, Michael finally sat across from Claire.

Twenty-three years of silence stood between them.

Claire whispered:

"Why didn't you come back?"

Michael looked at her.

"I tried."

"When?"

"Three times."

"Why didn't I know?"

"Edward intercepted every message."

Claire cried.

"I thought you were dead."

"I know."

"I mourned you."

"I know."

"Every year."

Michael lowered his head.

"I'm sorry."

Claire looked at him.

"Did you know Ethan was alive?"

"Yes."

"When?"

"The day he was born."

"Then why didn't you take him?"

Michael looked toward Richard.

"Because I saw him."

"Who?"

"Richard."

Claire frowned.

"Richard was standing outside the hospital."

"He was?"

Michael nodded.

"He looked terrified."

"Why?"

"Because Edward had threatened him."

Claire's eyes widened.

"What did he say?"

Michael answered:

"Edward told Richard that if he stayed near Ethan, Ethan would die."

Claire covered her mouth.

"So Richard..."

"Protected him from a distance."

She began crying again.

Michael whispered:

"That's why I trusted him."

Later that night, Richard sat alone beside Ethan's hospital bed.

Ethan was asleep.

Michael stood in the doorway.

"Can I come in?"

Richard nodded.

Michael sat down.

For a while, neither spoke.

Then Michael said:

"You don't have to worry about me taking him."

Richard looked at him.

"I wasn't."

"You were."

Richard smiled faintly.

"Maybe."

Michael looked at Ethan.

"He's lucky."

"Why?"

"Because he has two fathers."

Richard looked at him.

Michael smiled.

"One gave him blood."

He looked at Richard.

"The other gave him a childhood."

Richard swallowed.

"What happens now?"

Michael's expression darkened.

"Now we stop Edward."

"And William."

Michael nodded.

"Especially William."

Richard frowned.

"I thought William was the victim."

Michael shook his head.

"That's what he wanted everyone to believe."

"What do you know?"

Michael leaned closer.

"William didn't disappear twenty-three years ago."

Richard stared.

"He was hiding."

"From Edward?"

"No."

Michael looked toward Ethan.

"From something much worse."

Richard whispered:

"What?"

Michael answered:

"William was the one who started Project Eight."

Richard froze.

"The children."

"Yes."

"The genetic experiments."

"Yes."

"Then Edward didn't create it?"

"No."

Michael shook his head.

"He inherited it."

Richard's face hardened.

"From William."

Michael nodded.

"And there's one more thing."

"What?"

Michael looked toward the sleeping boy.

"Project Eight isn't finished."

Richard's blood ran cold.

"What does that mean?"

Michael whispered:

"The other children are still alive."

Across town, inside an underground laboratory, dozens of monitors flickered on.

Files appeared.

Names.

Faces.

Children.

Adults.

Families.

At the center of the screen was one name.

SUBJECT 08 — ETHAN BENNETT.

Then another.

SUBJECT 09 — ACTIVE.

Another.

SUBJECT 10 — ACTIVE.

Another.

SUBJECT 11 — ACTIVE.

The list continued.

At the bottom appeared:

SUBJECT 17 — LOCATION UNKNOWN.

Then the screen changed.

A live camera feed appeared.

A teenage girl sat inside a dark room.

She looked directly into the camera.

Then she whispered:

"Is Ethan finally coming?"

A man standing behind the camera answered:

"Yes."

The girl smiled.

"Then it's almost time."

The camera moved backward.

Revealing dozens of doors.

Each door had a number.

And behind every door...

someone was waiting.

In the hospital, Richard stood beside Ethan's bed.

He looked at Michael.

"We thought this was about money."

Michael shook his head.

"It never was."

"Then what is it about?"

Michael stared through the window.

"Control."

Richard looked at Ethan.

"And now?"

Michael's voice became quiet.

"Now Ethan has a choice."

"What choice?"

Michael turned.

"Whether he destroys everything our families built..."

He paused.

"...or saves the people trapped inside it."

Richard looked at his son.

Outside, the first light of morning appeared over Boston.

A new day had begun.

But somewhere beneath the city, seventeen doors remained locked.

May you like

And behind one of them...

a child was waiting for Ethan.
