CHAPTER 11 — THE FATHER WHO NEVER DIED

The alarm screamed through the underground facility.

Red lights flashed along the concrete walls.

Ethan ran beside Victor, his small hand locked around the man's wrist.

"Where are we going?"

"Keep moving."

"Who was that man?"

Victor didn't answer.

Ethan looked back.

"Who was the man with Grandpa?"

Victor stopped for half a second.

"Your grandfather isn't the man you think he is."

"I know."

Victor stared at him.

"You do?"

Ethan nodded.

"Mom told me."

Victor's expression softened.

"Then you know enough to survive."

They reached a steel door.

Victor punched a code into the keypad.

Nothing happened.

He tried again.

Still nothing.

Behind them, footsteps approached.

Victor looked at Ethan.

"Stay behind me."

The footsteps became louder.

Then a voice echoed through the corridor.

"You can't run forever, Victor."

Edward.

Victor's jaw tightened.

He turned toward Ethan.

"When the door opens, run."

"Where?"

"Anywhere."

"But you—"

"Go."

The keypad suddenly turned green.

The door unlocked.

Victor pushed Ethan through.

Then turned back.

Edward appeared at the end of the corridor.

And beside him stood William Bennett.

Ethan's biological grandfather.

The man everyone believed had died twenty-three years ago.

Victor stared at William.

"You're supposed to be dead."

William smiled.

"So is half this family."

Inside the chamber, Ethan ran until he reached a staircase.

He climbed.

One floor.

Two.

Three.

Then he heard a familiar voice.

"Ethan!"

He stopped.

"Sam?"

Samuel appeared at the top of the stairs.

He rushed down and pulled Ethan into his arms.

"Oh, thank God."

Ethan hugged him tightly.

"Where's Victor?"

Samuel looked behind him.

"Where did you leave him?"

"With Grandpa."

Samuel froze.

"Edward?"

Ethan shook his head.

"William."

Samuel's face went pale.

"William Bennett?"

Ethan nodded.

"He was with Edward."

Samuel stared.

"That can't be."

"He said my name."

Samuel's breathing became shallow.

"What did he say?"

"He called me his grandson."

Samuel closed his eyes.

"Then he's alive."

Ethan looked at him.

"Is he my real grandfather?"

Samuel nodded.

"Yes."

"Then why did everyone say he was dead?"

"Because Edward wanted everyone to believe it."

Ethan frowned.

"Why?"

Samuel looked toward the stairwell.

"Because your grandfather was the only man who could destroy him."

At the courthouse, Richard and Claire arrived with Detective Reed.

The building was nearly empty.

The custody hearing had ended hours earlier, but the story had already spread across the city.

News crews still waited outside.

Reporters wanted answers.

Who was the elderly janitor?

Why had the millionaire's son rejected him?

And where was the boy now?

Richard ignored every camera.

He walked directly toward the courtroom.

Claire followed.

Reed locked the doors behind them.

"Samuel said the entrance is underneath this room."

Richard looked around.

"How?"

Claire pointed toward the judge's bench.

"Under there."

They approached.

Reed searched the floor.

Nothing.

Then he noticed a small metal plate.

He pried it open.

A keypad appeared.

Claire stared.

"How does a courtroom have this?"

Reed looked at her.

"Because this isn't a normal courtroom."

He entered the number from Samuel's message.

The floor clicked.

A section of wood moved.

A staircase appeared.

Richard stared into the darkness.

"How long has this been here?"

Claire whispered:

"Twenty-three years."

They descended.

The air became colder.

The walls were lined with old photographs.

Richard stopped.

One photograph showed Edward Hawthorne.

Another showed William Bennett.

Between them stood a young Judge Harrison.

Richard's eyes widened.

"The judge."

Claire nodded.

"He was part of it."

Reed examined the photograph.

"Not just part."

He pointed toward a plaque.

TRUST ADMINISTRATION COMMITTEE — ORIGINAL MEMBERS.

Three names were engraved.

Edward Hawthorne.

William Bennett.

Judge Samuel Harrison.

Richard stared.

"Why would they create a trust together?"

Claire looked at him.

"Because they weren't enemies yet."

Richard froze.

"What?"

"They were partners."

Twenty-three years earlier...

William Bennett stood in the Hawthorne library.

He was young.

Confident.

Angry.

Edward stood opposite him.

Between them lay financial documents.

"We agreed to equal control," William said.

Edward shook his head.

"We agreed to equal ownership."

"Same thing."

"No."

Edward smiled.

"Ownership can be changed."

William stared.

"You betrayed me."

"I improved the arrangement."

"You stole my company."

"I acquired it."

"You destroyed my family."

Edward's expression remained calm.

"You made the mistake of trusting me."

William clenched his fists.

Then Judge Harrison entered.

"What happened?"

William turned.

"Edward changed the trust."

The judge looked at Edward.

"Did you?"

Edward smiled.

"Only because William broke the agreement."

William laughed bitterly.

"He's lying."

Edward placed a document on the table.

"Read it."

Judge Harrison did.

His face changed.

William stepped closer.

"What does it say?"

The judge looked at him.

"You signed away your controlling interest."

William stared.

"No."

Edward smiled.

"You signed it willingly."

William looked at the signature.

It was his.

But he didn't remember signing it.

Then he noticed something.

The ink.

The date.

The document had been created after the agreement.

"Forgery."

Edward's expression hardened.

"You can't prove it."

William looked at Judge Harrison.

"You're going to let him do this?"

The judge remained silent.

That silence ended their partnership.

And began the war.

Back in the underground chamber, Richard found another file.

He opened it.

Inside was a DNA report.

His name.

Claire's name.

William's name.

And Ethan's.

Richard read the result.

Then his hands began shaking.

"Claire."

She approached.

"What?"

Richard pointed.

"This says Ethan's DNA matches William."

Claire stared.

"Yes."

Richard frowned.

"But that doesn't make sense."

"Why?"

"Because William isn't Ethan's father."

Claire looked at him.

"He's his grandfather."

Richard read the report again.

Then another line caught his attention.

PATERNAL LINE: BENNETT.

Richard looked at Claire.

"Who was Ethan's father?"

Claire hesitated.

"I told you."

"Victor?"

"No."

"Alexander?"

"No."

"Then who?"

Claire's eyes filled with tears.

"I don't know."

Richard stared at her.

"You don't know?"

"Not for certain."

"But you said William was the family line."

"He was."

"Then someone from his bloodline fathered Ethan."

Richard froze.

"Someone who disappeared."

Claire nodded.

"Exactly."

Reed stepped closer.

"Who?"

Claire whispered:

"Daniel Bennett."

Richard's face changed.

"The man who took Ethan."

Claire nodded.

"No."

Richard shook his head.

"That can't be."

"It can."

Ethan and Samuel reached the upper floor.

The lights flickered.

Samuel looked around.

"This isn't the courthouse."

"Where are we?"

"The old records building."

Ethan looked toward the window.

Outside, Boston Harbor stretched beneath the morning sky.

Then Ethan noticed something.

A man standing across the street.

Gray coat.

Dark hat.

Watching the building.

Ethan whispered:

"Sam."

Samuel looked.

The man disappeared.

"Who was that?"

"I don't know."

Ethan touched his chest.

"He looked like Dad."

Samuel stared.

"What?"

"Like Dad."

Samuel immediately pulled him away from the window.

"We need to move."

In the underground chamber, Richard found a second room.

Inside were dozens of sealed envelopes.

Each had a child's name.

Reed opened one.

"These are adoption records."

Claire's face tightened.

"How many?"

"Forty-three."

Richard stared.

"Forty-three children?"

"All connected to Hawthorne companies."

Claire opened another.

"This isn't adoption."

"What is it?"

"Genetic selection."

Reed frowned.

"Meaning?"

Claire's voice shook.

"Edward wasn't just looking for heirs."

She looked at Richard.

"He was creating them."

Silence.

Richard felt sick.

"Why?"

"Because he wanted people who could legally inherit his assets."

Reed looked at the records.

"Children were selected based on DNA?"

Claire nodded.

"Certain bloodlines."

Richard whispered:

"Ethan."

"Yes."

"He wasn't born by accident."

Claire looked away.

"He was chosen."

Suddenly, a phone rang.

Everyone froze.

It came from inside one of the envelopes.

Richard opened it.

An old phone lay inside.

The screen displayed:

CALLING — EDWARD.

Richard answered.

"Where is my son?"

Edward's voice was calm.

"Safe."

"Let him go."

"You still think this is about Ethan."

"What do you want?"

"Your cooperation."

"You won't get it."

Edward sighed.

"You sound like your mother."

Richard froze.

"My mother?"

"She was stubborn too."

"What did you do to her?"

Edward laughed softly.

"I loved her."

Richard's face hardened.

"You destroyed her."

"No."

Edward paused.

"William did."

Claire stepped forward.

"He's lying."

Edward continued:

"William abandoned his family."

Richard looked at Claire.

"Did he?"

She shook her head.

"No."

Edward's voice became colder.

"Ask Claire why she never told you about Daniel."

Richard's expression changed.

"Daniel?"

Edward laughed.

"The truth is finally catching up."

The call ended.

At the old records building, Ethan and Samuel entered an abandoned office.

Samuel locked the door.

Ethan sat down.

"Sam."

"What?"

"Am I bad?"

Samuel immediately shook his head.

"No."

"Then why does everyone want me?"

"Because people are afraid of what you can become."

"What can I become?"

Samuel smiled sadly.

"Someone who chooses love over power."

Ethan thought about it.

Then asked:

"Was Dad like that?"

Samuel nodded.

"Your father made mistakes."

"But he loves me."

"Yes."

"Even if I'm not his real son?"

Samuel smiled.

"Blood doesn't make a father."

Ethan looked down.

"Then what does?"

Samuel answered:

"Showing up."

Ethan's eyes filled with tears.

"Like you."

Samuel hugged him.

"Exactly."

Then someone knocked.

Three times.

Knock.

Knock.

Knock.

Samuel froze.

Ethan whispered:

"That's the same sound."

Samuel stood.

"What sound?"

"The sound from the night I was taken."

Samuel's hand reached for the door.

"Stay behind me."

He opened it.

Nobody was there.

Only a small envelope on the floor.

Samuel picked it up.

Inside was a photograph.

Richard.

Claire.

Ethan.

And another man.

The same man Ethan had seen outside.

On the back were four words:

HE IS NOT DEAD.

Samuel stared.

Then a second note fell out.

YOUR FATHER IS COMING.

Ethan looked up.

"My father?"

Samuel nodded slowly.

At the Hawthorne estate, Edward entered a private room.

William sat by the fireplace.

Older.

But still powerful.

"You were right," Edward said.

William looked at him.

"What?"

"The boy chose Richard."

William smiled.

"Of course he did."

Edward frowned.

"You expected it?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

William looked toward the window.

"Because Ethan isn't yours."

Edward's expression changed.

"I know."

"No."

William turned.

"You don't understand."

"What?"

"Ethan wasn't created to inherit the trust."

Edward stared.

"Then why?"

William smiled.

"To destroy it."

Edward's face darkened.

"Impossible."

"Not if the original clause is activated."

"What clause?"

William stood.

"The clause you erased."

Edward's eyes narrowed.

"What clause?"

William walked toward him.

"The one that gives Ethan the power to dissolve the entire Hawthorne empire."

Edward froze.

William smiled.

"And the only person who can activate it..."

He paused.

"...is Ethan himself."

Back in the records building, Samuel looked at Ethan.

"We need to go."

"Where?"

"To your father."

Ethan stood.

"Where is he?"

Samuel opened the envelope again.

A location was written beneath the photograph.

HARBOR WAREHOUSE 17.

They left immediately.

Neither noticed the black car waiting across the street.

Inside sat Daniel.

He watched them leave.

Then called someone.

"They're moving."

A voice answered.

"Good."

Daniel asked:

"Do I bring the boy?"

The voice paused.

"No."

"Then what?"

"Bring Samuel."

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

"Why?"

"Because he remembers everything."

At Harbor Warehouse 17, Victor stood alone.

He watched the water.

A car approached.

Richard stepped out.

Claire followed.

Reed stayed behind.

Victor turned.

Richard stared at him.

"You know where Ethan is."

Victor nodded.

"Yes."

"Where?"

Victor looked at Claire.

"Before I tell you, there's something you need to know."

Richard stepped closer.

"What?"

Victor took a deep breath.

"Ethan's father is alive."

Claire closed her eyes.

Richard whispered:

"Daniel."

Victor shook his head.

"No."

"Then who?"

Victor looked toward the warehouse door.

"You've met him."

Richard frowned.

"When?"

Victor's eyes filled with sadness.

"At the custody hearing."

Richard's blood ran cold.

"The janitor?"

Victor nodded.

"Samuel?"

"No."

Victor whispered:

"The man you thought was the janitor wasn't the man who raised Ethan."

Richard stared.

"Then who?"

Victor pointed toward the warehouse.

A figure stepped out of the shadows.

Silver hair.

Tired eyes.

A face Ethan had never seen clearly.

Richard froze.

Claire covered her mouth.

The man looked at them.

"I am Alexander Bennett."

Richard's heart stopped.

Alexander smiled sadly.

"And I am Ethan's father."

Behind him stood Ethan.

Alive.

Safe.

And holding the original birth certificate.

But the moment Claire saw the document...

her expression changed.

Because the name written under Father was not Alexander.

Not Victor.

Not Richard.

Not Daniel.

There was another name.

One that could destroy everything.

EDWARD HAWTHORNE.

Richard stared at the paper.

Claire whispered:

"No..."

Alexander looked at her.

"That's why he wants Ethan."

The warehouse fell silent.

Then Ethan looked at Richard.

"Dad..."

Richard looked at him.

Ethan's eyes filled with tears.

"I don't care whose blood I have."

He walked toward Richard.

"I still choose you."

Richard pulled him into his arms.

And for one brief moment, the entire war seemed to disappear.

Until Alexander spoke again.

"Richard..."

Richard looked up.

"What?"

Alexander's face was grim.

"The birth certificate is fake."

Richard froze.

"What?"

Alexander pointed to the document.

"Edward forged it."

"Then who is Ethan's father?"

Alexander looked toward the dark warehouse entrance.

"That's what the original record will reveal."

A gunshot suddenly shattered the silence.

The document flew from Ethan's hands.

Everyone dropped.

May you like

And from the shadows came Edward's voice.

"You should have stayed away from my family."
