Chapter 2 – Five Years of Silence
"I don't understand," Ethan finally whispered.
Claire thanked the nanny, who gently led the boys toward the Bentley while giving them juice boxes.
Only after they were out of earshot did Claire answer.
"You weren't supposed to."
"What do you mean?"
She looked at him quietly.
"The day I left, I already knew."
His face drained of color.
"You were pregnant?"
Claire nodded.
"You never told me."
"You never asked."
His voice rose.
"I had every right to know!"
She met his anger without flinching.
"Did I have the right to be heard?"
The words landed harder than any accusation.
She continued.
"You were building your empire."
"You canceled anniversaries."
"You skipped doctor's appointments."
"You answered conference calls during dinner."
"I became another appointment on your calendar."
Ethan remembered.
Every word was true.
"When I learned I was expecting..."
Claire paused.
"...I realized I didn't want my children growing up believing love looked like loneliness."
"So you left."
"I chose them."
"And I chose myself."
Ethan looked toward the Bentley.
The boys were laughing together inside.
