The cabin settled into silence as the aircraft climbed above the clouds.
Neither Claire nor Ethan spoke.
For several minutes, only the soft hum of the engines filled the space between them.
Ethan finally broke the silence.
"So..."
He glanced at the ringless hand resting on her book.
"Still single?"
His tone carried the familiar confidence that had once intimidated investors and competitors alike.
Claire smiled politely.
"I've learned that peace is worth more than appearances."
He chuckled.
"That's not an answer."
"It's enough of one."
He leaned back.
"I heard you left New York after the divorce."
"I did."
"And you've stayed out of the headlines."
"I wanted a normal life."
Ethan studied her carefully.
She looked different.
Not wealthier.
Not poorer.
Simply... happier.
That puzzled him.
He remembered the day she signed the divorce papers.
She had accepted almost nothing.
No mansion.
No shares.
No settlement beyond what the lawyers insisted upon.
He had assumed pride would eventually force her back.
She never returned.
"You know," Ethan said, "I thought I'd hear from you eventually."
Claire looked out the window.
"But you never did."
"No."
"Why?"
She turned toward him.
"Because I finally discovered who I was when I wasn't Mrs. Ethan Calloway."
For the first time in years, Ethan found himself speechless.
When the plane landed in Chicago, they walked off separately.
Outside the private terminal, Ethan's driver opened the rear door of a black Bentley waiting beside the curb.
Then something unexpected happened.
Three little boys—identical, no older than four—jumped out laughing.
The moment they spotted Claire, they ran toward her.
"Mom!"
"Mommy!"
"We missed you!"
Claire knelt as the boys crashed into her arms.
She hugged all three at once, laughing through happy tears.
Ethan froze.
His eyes moved from the children...
...to Claire.
Then back again.
The oldest looked up and smiled.
"Hi!"
Ethan couldn't breathe.
Each little face carried unmistakable pieces of his own childhood photographs.
Impossible.
Absolutely impossible.
Claire slowly stood.
Their eyes met.
