CHAPTER 1 — The Truth Beneath the Water

Christopher Pierce didn't speak after pulling Emma out of the pool.

He simply held her.

His hands shook as he wrapped both arms around the tiny body pressed against his chest.

Water streamed from her soaked hair.

Then—

She coughed.

Once.

Twice.

A rush of water spilled from her lips.

A second later...

She cried.

The sound shattered the terrifying silence that had swallowed the Pierce estate.

Christopher closed his eyes.

Only then did he breathe.

His daughter was alive.

Very slowly, he stood.

Without saying a word, he moved Emma behind him, one arm protecting her trembling body.

His gaze settled on Juliette.

She had been screaming only moments earlier.

Crying.

Begging everyone to believe Emma had slipped.

Claiming she had jumped into the pool to save her.

But Christopher no longer saw panic.

He saw calculation.

The performance was over.

The fear on Juliette's face was finally real.

"Chris..." she whispered, taking one cautious step forward.

"It happened so fast. I tried to—"

"You tried to murder my daughter."

Christopher's voice remained calm.

Almost frighteningly calm.

"For a house you'll never own."

The words echoed across the courtyard.

Gardeners froze.

Maids stopped moving.

Even the security guards lowered their heads.

No one dared speak.

Juliette's face turned completely white.

"You... you don't know what you're saying."

"Oh, I know exactly what I'm saying."

Christopher looked down at Emma.

The little girl clung tightly to his shirt.

She wasn't crying anymore.

She was terrified.

Not of the water.

Of Juliette.

That realization hurt Christopher more than anything.

How many times had Emma looked this frightened?

How many times had he ignored it?

For months, Juliette had whispered poison into his ears.

Emma was stubborn.

Emma lied.

Emma misbehaved.

Emma needed discipline.

Every small mistake became proof that the child was impossible to raise.

Christopher had been busy building an empire.

Closing billion-dollar deals.

Expanding the Pierce Corporation around the world.

He convinced himself Juliette was helping.

That she only wanted what was best.

He had been blind.

And Emma had paid the price.

"Security," Christopher ordered quietly.

Two guards stepped forward.

Juliette immediately backed away.

"No... Christopher, please."

"I said escort her out."

"You can't believe a child over me!"

Before Christopher could answer...

A small voice broke the silence.

"Daddy..."

It was the first time Emma had called him that in front of anyone.

Christopher froze.

So did everyone else.

The secret he had protected for eight years disappeared with one word.

Daddy.

Emma buried her face against his shoulder.

Her tiny voice shook.

"She said Grandma doesn't want me here anymore."

The courtyard became deathly still.

No one asked which grandmother.

Everyone knew.

Estelle Pierce.

Christopher's mother.

The woman who controlled the Pierce family with an iron hand.

Juliette immediately panicked.

"She's confused!"

"She's scared!"

"Children imagine things—"

"Enough."

The voice came from behind them.

Mrs. Yvette Sloan stepped forward.

The elderly housekeeper had served the Pierce family for more than thirty years.

In her wrinkled hands...

She carried a small digital recorder.

"I believe Mr. Pierce deserves to hear this."

Christopher accepted it without speaking.

Yvette nodded.

"I placed it inside the pool cabana this morning."

Juliette's eyes widened.

"No..."

Christopher pressed play.

Static crackled through the speaker.

Then came Juliette's voice.

Clear.

Calm.

"If she stays in the will..."

A second voice answered.

Older.

Colder.

"What are you waiting for?"

Juliette laughed softly.

"A child only needs one unattended accident."

Christopher felt Emma tighten her grip around his neck.

His heartbeat stopped.

The recording continued.

"If Emma disappears..."

"Everything belongs to us."

Christopher slowly lowered the recorder.

He looked directly at Juliette.

There were no tears left in his eyes.

Only disappointment.

Only rage.

Only the unbearable guilt of realizing he had invited a monster into his own home.

Juliette dropped to her knees.

"I didn't mean it."

"You have to believe me."

"I was angry."

"I never—"

"You pushed her."

Christopher interrupted.

"I saw the security footage before I reached the pool."

Juliette stopped breathing.

She had forgotten about the cameras.

Or perhaps...

She believed someone had already erased them.

Christopher's expression hardened.

"I know who helped you."

Juliette's lips trembled.

"You don't understand."

"Oh..."

Christopher replied.

"I understand more than you think."

He turned toward the mansion.

The curtains on the second-floor balcony shifted ever so slightly.

Someone was watching.

Someone who had remained hidden while Emma fought for her life.

His own mother.

Christopher finally understood.

Emma hadn't nearly drowned because of an accident.

She had been marked for death.

Not because of who she was.

But because of what she would one day inherit.

May you like

And saving her from the swimming pool...

Had only been the beginning.
