CHAPTER 2 — THE RECEPTION THAT BECAME A FAREWELL

Andrew stepped closer.
"Clara... please. We can replace the dress."
She shook her head.
"You still don't understand."
She nodded toward the orchestra.
The musicians stopped playing.
Then every waiter in the ballroom lined up beside the stage.
The head chef appeared carrying a microphone.
"Good evening, everyone."
"Before dinner begins, our owner has a brief announcement."
Every guest turned toward Clara.
She walked onto the stage without rushing.
"I purchased this estate for one reason."
She looked directly at Andrew.
"I wanted the happiest day of my life to happen in a place no one could ever take from me."
She paused.
"I never imagined the person who would try to ruin it would become my own family."
No one spoke.
"I prepared tonight's reception months ago."
She smiled politely.
"The food has already been paid for."
"The music has already been paid for."
"The staff has already been paid for."
She took a slow breath.
"But the wedding..."
"...is canceled."
Shock exploded through the ballroom.
Andrew's face turned white.
"What?"
"I will not marry a man who watched me be humiliated and asked me to apologize."
Patricia rushed toward the stage.
"You can't embarrass our family like this!"
Clara met her eyes.
"You embarrassed your family the moment you confused kindness with weakness."
Security quietly stepped between them.
Not because Patricia had been ordered out...
But because the estate belonged to Clara.
The manager bowed again.
"Mrs. Whitlock... I'm afraid your invitation has been revoked."
Patricia's jaw dropped.
"You can't remove me!"
The manager answered calmly.
"The owner just did."
Applause began in the back of the ballroom.
Then another.
Soon hundreds of guests were standing.
May you like
Not for the wedding...
But for the bride who finally chose herself.
