CHAPTER 1 — THE OWNER NOBODY EXPECTED

Silence swallowed the ballroom.

No one moved.

No one even breathed.

Patricia Whitlock stared at the leather folder in the venue manager's hands as though it were written in another language.

"This... this is impossible."

The manager remained respectfully bowed.

"There is no mistake, Mrs. Whitlock. Ms. Clara Mason purchased Whitestone Estate eighteen months ago through Mason Hospitality Holdings."

Gasps rippled through the guests.

Andrew blinked.

"Mason... Holdings?"

Clara calmly accepted the folder.

"I never hid my last name."

She opened the contract and turned it toward the crowd.

"My grandfather built a hotel company from nothing. My parents expanded it across three countries."

Andrew felt his stomach tighten.

"You... you're wealthy?"

Clara looked at him without emotion.

"You never asked."

Patricia laughed nervously.

"If that's true, why pretend to be ordinary?"

"Because I wanted to marry someone who loved me."

Her eyes shifted toward Andrew.

"Instead, I discovered I was marrying someone who loved his mother's approval more than his future wife."

The words struck harder than any slap.

Patricia suddenly pointed at the ruined dress.

"It was only a dress!"

Clara smiled sadly.

"No."

"It was the wedding gown my late mother designed before she died."

The room froze again.

"My seamstresses finished it exactly as she had sketched it ten years ago."

Clara gently touched the torn lace.

"You didn't destroy fabric."

"You destroyed the last gift my mother ever left me."

For the first time that day...

Patricia had no words.
