Chapter 10 - Elena’s Final Message

Three days later, Victor watched the remainder of Elena’s recording.

Lily sat beside him.

Marco stood near the hospital door.

Ethan rested in Victor’s lap, protected by a soft cast.

Elena appeared on the screen inside her parked car.

She looked exhausted.

“Victor, I know you will want revenge.”

Victor’s eyes lowered.

“But revenge will not give Ethan a childhood.”

The child played with the edge of Victor’s sleeve.

Elena continued.

“Your father taught you that mercy is weakness. Gabriel encouraged that belief because it made you easy to control.”

Victor looked toward Marco.

Neither man spoke.

“You are not your father,” Elena said. “You are not Gabriel. But you will become them if you continue choosing fear over trust.”

The video shook slightly as Elena adjusted the camera.

“I planned to leave Chicago with Ethan.”

Victor closed his eyes.

“I hated myself for hiding that from you. I also knew you would stop me.”

Lily watched Victor’s face.

He did not appear angry.

Only wounded.

“If I survived long enough, I intended to give you one choice. Come with us or lose us.”

Elena smiled sadly.

“I believed you might choose us.”

Ethan made a quiet sound.

Victor kissed the top of his head.

The recording continued.

“Samuel Harper promised to protect the evidence. He also promised that if I died, he would find someone brave enough to protect Ethan.”

Lily stopped breathing.

Elena looked directly into the camera.

“Samuel spoke often about his sister.”

Lily’s eyes filled.

“He said she was stubborn, kind and incapable of ignoring someone who needed help.”

A tear slipped down Lily’s cheek.

Victor looked at her.

Elena continued.

“Lily, I do not know whether you will ever see this. But if you do, I am sorry. Your brother became involved because of me.”

Lily covered her mouth.

“He believed children should not inherit the sins of their families.”

Victor lowered his head.

“I hope my son meets you in a safer world.”

The video ended.

For several minutes, the hospital room remained silent.

Lily wiped her face.

“My brother knew I might become Ethan’s nanny.”

Victor nodded.

“He sent you to protect him.”

“No.”

Lily looked at the sleeping child.

“He left me enough clues to make the decision myself.”

Victor understood.

Samuel knew his sister.

He did not order her into danger.

He trusted that once she learned a child was threatened, she would choose to help.

Marco cleared his throat.

“Agent Shaw is requesting a meeting.”

Victor handed Ethan to Lily.

“What does she want?”

“Full cooperation.”

“She has the files.”

“She wants the Blackwood financial network.”

Victor’s expression hardened.

“That includes legitimate companies.”

“It also includes shipping firms used by Gabriel.”

Victor looked toward the city skyline.

The Blackwood empire employed thousands of people.

Restaurants.

Construction companies.

Security firms.

Warehouses.

Some were legal.

Some existed in the gray spaces between business and crime.

Others had been built on violence.

“How much does she know?” Victor asked.

“Enough.”

“And what does she offer?”

“Reduced charges for anyone who cooperates. Witness protection for Lily. Immunity for household staff who were unknowingly involved.”

“And me?”

Marco hesitated.

“Nothing.”

Lily looked at Victor.

“What charges could they bring?”

“Racketeering. Extortion. Tax violations. Conspiracy.”

“You could go to prison.”

“Yes.”

Ethan stirred in her arms.

Victor watched him.

Agent Shaw entered ten minutes later.

She carried no weapon openly, but two agents waited outside.

“Mr. Blackwood.”

“Agent.”

She placed a folder on the table.

“Gabriel is awake.”

“Has he spoken?”

“He claims you created the evidence to seize control of Montigue Shipping.”

Victor almost smiled.

“Serena?”

“She is requesting a deal.”

“What does she offer?”

“Testimony against Gabriel, Adrian and you.”

Lily stared at Shaw.

“Against Victor?”

“Ms. Montigue claims Victor ordered the hospital attack to silence her.”

“That is absurd.”

“It is also consistent with the public story she has been building.”

Victor remained calm.

“Will you believe her?”

“I believe evidence.”

Shaw looked toward Ethan’s cast.

“And children who cannot create their own injuries.”

She opened the folder.

“The hidden camera footage clears Lily of the assault. The medical evidence supports repeated abuse.”

“Then charge Serena.”

“We will.”

“What do you want from me?”

“Every account, every route and every official your organization paid.”

Victor leaned back.

“In exchange?”

Shaw glanced at Ethan.

“You plead guilty to financial crimes. You serve a sentence negotiated with prosecutors. Your legitimate companies enter independent oversight.”

Lily’s heart sank.

“How long?”

“Possibly eight years.”

Victor showed no reaction.

Marco did.

“That is unacceptable.”

Shaw looked at him.

“The alternative could be life.”

Victor’s gaze stayed on Ethan.

The child smiled at him.

Eight years.

Ethan would be almost ten when Victor returned.

He would miss first words.

First day of school.

Birthdays.

Nightmares.

Every ordinary moment Elena had wanted their son to have.

Victor looked at Shaw.

“No.”

Lily stepped closer.

“Victor.”

“I will give you Gabriel’s network and every account he controlled.”

“That is not enough.”

“I will dismantle every illegal operation still under my authority.”

“You cannot negotiate your innocence.”

“I am not.”

Victor’s voice was quiet.

“I am negotiating the future of three thousand employees who had nothing to do with Gabriel.”

Shaw studied him.

“You believe you can transform an organized crime network into a legitimate corporation?”

“No.”

Victor looked toward Marco.

“I believe I can destroy the network without destroying every family dependent on the legal businesses.”

Shaw closed the folder.

“You have seventy-two hours to provide a complete proposal.”

After she left, Lily faced Victor.

“You were ready to accept prison.”

“I am still ready.”

“Then why refuse?”

“Because Ethan should not inherit an empire built on fear.”

He touched his son’s cast.

“But he also should not inherit the suffering caused by destroying innocent people overnight.”

Marco looked at him.

“What are you planning?”

Victor’s eyes moved toward the skyline.

“To end the Blackwood organization.”

Marco’s face changed.

“You cannot end it without someone trying to take it.”

“I know.”

“Every crew in Chicago will come for the territory.”

“I know.”

Lily felt the next war forming before Victor spoke.

“We remove the money, the routes and the protection.”

Marco understood.

“And when they attack?”

May you like

Victor looked at Ethan.

“We make sure there is nothing left for them to inherit.”
