Chapter 1 - The Recording

The hidden camera footage began without sound.

For three seconds, the screen showed nothing but the empty marble foyer.

Then Serena Montigue appeared.

Victor stood in the private security room with Ethan cradled against his chest.

Dr. Marino had arrived seven minutes earlier and was examining the baby on a padded table beside him.

Lily sat in a chair near the wall.

Her torn dress hung from one shoulder.

A dark bruise was already forming across her abdomen.

Marco stood at the control panel, his face expressionless as the video continued.

On the screen, Serena entered the foyer carrying Ethan.

She looked over both shoulders.

Then she checked her phone.

“Timestamp is 7:42 p.m.,” Marco said.

Victor did not answer.

The footage showed Serena placing Ethan on the floor.

The baby immediately reached for her.

Instead of lifting him, she slapped his small hand away.

Lily closed her eyes.

She had not seen that part.

When she opened them again, Serena was gripping Ethan’s wrist.

The recording had no sound, but the violence needed no explanation.

The child’s body slid across the marble.

His mouth opened in a scream.

Victor’s jaw tightened.

Dr. Marino carefully touched Ethan’s swollen arm.

The baby whimpered.

“The shoulder may be dislocated,” the doctor said. “There could also be a fracture near the elbow.”

Victor continued watching the screen.

Serena kicked Lily.

Once.

Then again.

Marco’s hands curled into fists.

Serena stood over the injured nanny and appeared to speak.

Victor looked toward the audio controls.

“Turn on the sound.”

Marco hesitated.

“Boss.”

“Turn it on.”

The room filled with Serena’s voice.

“You are a cheap nanny with no family, no money, and no power.”

Lily stared at the floor.

Victor watched Serena press her heel into Lily’s stomach.

“Nobody cares about a nobody like you.”

Victor lowered his eyes toward Ethan.

The child’s tiny fingers were clutching his shirt.

Then Serena said the words that changed everything.

“After we are married, Victor will learn that children can be replaced.”

Dr. Marino stopped moving.

Marco slowly turned away from the monitor.

Victor did not react.

That frightened Lily more than anger would have.

The footage continued.

Serena disabled the main security system.

She threatened Lily.

She rehearsed the story she intended to tell Victor.

Then the doors opened.

Victor’s early arrival appeared on the screen.

Marco stopped the recording.

Silence settled over the room.

Serena stood outside the security room under the watch of two guards.

She had spent the previous ten minutes pleading.

Then threatening.

Then demanding an attorney.

Victor handed Ethan to Dr. Marino.

“Take him to the medical suite.”

“Victor,” the doctor said carefully, “he needs imaging equipment at a hospital.”

“No public hospital.”

“His condition is serious.”

Victor looked at Marco.

“Prepare the underground garage.”

Marco nodded.

“We will use St. Catherine’s private pediatric wing.”

Dr. Marino carried Ethan toward the door.

Before leaving, he looked at Lily.

“You need medical attention too.”

“I’m fine.”

“You were kicked in the abdomen twice.”

“I said I’m fine.”

Victor’s eyes shifted toward her.

“You are going with them.”

Lily started to protest.

Then Ethan reached toward her.

His fingers opened weakly.

“Li,” he whispered.

It was barely a sound.

But it was the first recognizable word he had ever spoken.

Lily’s breath caught.

She moved toward him.

“I’m here.”

Ethan touched her cheek.

Victor watched them.

Something painful passed through his eyes.

“Go with my son,” he said.

Lily followed Dr. Marino from the room.

When the door closed, Victor faced Marco.

“How long has Serena had access to my security system?”

“Four months.”

“Who authorized it?”

“You did.”

Victor’s stare hardened.

Marco lowered his head.

“After she claimed someone had entered her bedroom.”

Victor remembered.

Serena had staged a break-in.

She said jewelry had been moved.

A window had been left open.

At the time, Victor believed she was being targeted by one of his enemies.

He gave her limited access to the security panel so she could activate alarms from her private rooms.

She had used that access to disable the cameras.

But she had not known about the backup system.

Victor walked into the hallway.

Serena stood between the guards.

The confidence had disappeared from her face.

“Victor, listen to me.”

He approached her.

“You injured my son.”

“She provoked me.”

“My fourteen-month-old child provoked you?”

“I was trying to protect him.”

“From what?”

Serena looked toward the closed security-room door.

“From Lily.”

Victor waited.

Serena seemed to realize she needed something stronger than the lie already destroyed by the footage.

Her expression changed.

“She is not who you think she is.”

Victor said nothing.

“She came into this house using a false identity.”

Marco looked at her sharply.

Serena continued.

“Her name is not Lily Hart.”

Victor’s gaze remained still.

Serena smiled faintly, sensing that she had finally surprised him.

“Her real name is Lillian Harper.”

The name struck Marco first.

His face changed.

Victor noticed.

“You know it?”

Marco did not answer immediately.

Serena’s smile grew.

“Ask him who Lily’s brother was.”

Victor looked at Marco.

“Who?”

Marco exhaled slowly.

“Detective Samuel Harper.”

Victor recognized the name.

A Chicago police detective who had spent years investigating organized crime.

A man who had died eighteen months earlier when his car exploded beneath an overpass.

Serena leaned closer.

“Lily did not come here to care for Ethan.”

Her eyes gleamed with desperate triumph.

“She came here to destroy you.”

Victor looked toward the hallway where Lily had disappeared with his injured son.

For the first time that night, doubt entered his expression.

May you like

Serena saw it.

And smiled.
