Chapter 6 - The Man on the Courthouse Steps

Police sealed six city blocks around the courthouse.
Julian Mercer sat completely still on the stone steps.
A metal collar surrounded his neck.
Wires ran beneath his shirt to a small black box strapped against his chest.
Cameras from nearby buildings captured the scene.
News helicopters circled overhead.
The handwritten message remained taped to his suit.
SOPHIE MUST COME ALONE.
Sophie watched the live broadcast from Evelyn’s apartment.
Julian’s face was bruised.
His lips moved repeatedly.
Daniel increased the volume.
Julian was whispering two words.
“Don’t come.”
Sophie turned to Evelyn.
“They don’t actually want me to go there.”
Lucas nodded.
“They want the public to believe you are involved.”
Within minutes, anonymous accounts began spreading claims that Sophie had kidnapped Julian to force a confession.
The same accounts posted edited clips portraying Cassandra as a victim.
A television commentator questioned whether an eleven-year-old could have organized the plot alone.
Another suggested Evelyn and Lucas were using her as a symbol.
The trap was not only physical.
It was designed to destroy Sophie’s credibility before the guardianship hearing.
Bomb technicians approached Julian with a shielded vehicle.
After forty tense minutes, they discovered the collar contained no explosives.
The device was fake.
Julian collapsed in relief.
He was taken to a hospital under police protection.
Detective Pike allowed Evelyn and Sophie to speak with him later that evening.
Julian lay in a private room with a guard outside.
The moment Sophie entered, he began crying.
“I’m sorry.”
Sophie stood at the end of his bed.
“Did you help Cassandra steal the money?”
“Yes.”
“Did you help her hurt my father?”
Julian turned away.
Sophie waited.
“Look at me.”
He forced himself to meet her eyes.
“I changed the plane’s maintenance schedule.”
Lucas stepped forward.
“Who ordered it?”
“Cassandra.”
“Did she order the sabotage?”
Julian shook his head.
“I never heard her say that.”
“What did she say?”
“She told me Adrian had become reckless.”
Julian’s breathing quickened.
“She said the company needed stability and that certain mechanical problems would delay his trip.”
“But the plane was not delayed,” Evelyn said.
“No.”
“Why?”
“The mechanic refused to sign the false report.”
Julian looked toward the door.
“He called Adrian directly.”
Sophie remembered her father leaving late that evening instead of early in the morning.
“Then who damaged the beacon?”
“I don’t know.”
Lucas moved closer.
“You expect us to believe that?”
“I was not at the hangar.”
“Where were you?”
“With Cassandra.”
“Can anyone verify that?”
Julian hesitated.
“Judge Bell.”
The room went silent.
According to Julian, Cassandra and Judge Bell met privately at the Whitmore mansion on the night Adrian died.
Bell had invested heavily in one of Cassandra’s hidden companies.
Adrian’s audit threatened to expose him.
They were discussing how to prevent Adrian from reaching federal investigators.
Julian claimed he left before midnight.
The crash occurred at one fifteen in the morning.
“What happened to you after the gala?” Daniel asked.
“A man took me from the parking garage.”
“Who?”
“I never saw his face.”
“Did he mention Cassandra?”
“He called her.”
Julian’s eyes filled with panic.
“He said, ‘The widow wants the girl frightened before Friday.’”
Sophie felt a chill.
The widow.
Cassandra.
Julian continued.
“They brought me to the airfield and made me write the numbers.”
“You chose the trust reference?” Sophie asked.
“Yes.”
“I hoped Evelyn would understand.”
“Why did they put you on the courthouse steps?”
“To create a spectacle.”
Julian looked at Sophie.
“And to deliver this.”
He reached beneath the hospital blanket.
The guard immediately entered.
Julian slowly removed a tiny key taped to his thigh.
“They hid it in my clothing.”
Daniel took it.
The key was old and brass, engraved with the number 19.
Lucas recognized it.
“Safe-deposit box.”
“Which bank?” Evelyn asked.
Julian closed his eyes.
“Whitmore National.”
The bank was partially owned by Cassandra’s family.
Daniel and Pike obtained a warrant for Box 19.
Inside was the stolen medical envelope from Boston.
Whoever attacked Lucas and Mia had intentionally placed it there.
“They wanted us to find it,” Mia said.
“Why?” Sophie asked.
The envelope contained Caroline Bennett’s medical records.
But no recording of Dr. Reeves.
Instead, there was a death certificate, a toxicology report, and a handwritten note from Caroline’s attending physician.
The note stated that Caroline had briefly regained consciousness after her automobile accident.
Her final words were recorded as:
CASSANDRA WAS NOT DRIVING.
Evelyn read the sentence twice.
“What does that mean?”
The official report said Caroline lost control of her car during heavy rain.
No other vehicle was involved.
Lucas examined the toxicology page.
Caroline had a powerful sedative in her system.
The medication was prescribed by Dr. Reeves.
“She was drugged before the crash,” Lucas said.
Mia searched the remaining documents.
At the bottom was a photograph from a traffic camera.
It showed Caroline’s car leaving a private club two hours before the accident.
A second vehicle followed closely behind.
The driver’s face was unclear.
But the license plate belonged to Evelyn Hart.
Everyone looked at her.
Evelyn’s face became completely still.
Sophie stepped away.
“Why was your car following my mother?”
Evelyn did not answer.
Lucas reached for the photograph.
“Tell her.”
Evelyn sat down.
Her hands began to shake.
“I was there that night.”
Sophie stared at her.
“You told me you were in Washington.”
“I lied.”
“Were you driving?”
“No.”
“Then who was?”
Evelyn looked toward the closed door.
“The person who has been protecting Cassandra all these years.”
May you like
She took a breath.
“Your grandfather.”
