Chapter 12 - The Price of a Life

The Winter Gala was an annual Whitmore tradition held at the family’s mountain resort in Vermont.

Adrian had canceled the event after Caroline’s death.

Cassandra revived it during their marriage.

This year’s gala was scheduled for the following night.

Although the company officially canceled the event after Cassandra’s removal, hundreds of guests had already arrived at the resort.

Cassandra knew the ballroom would be full.

She wanted another public spectacle.

This time, she intended to control the screen.

Federal agents advised Sophie not to attend.

Lucas agreed.

Evelyn demanded that authorities raid every possible location near the site of Adrian’s crash.

But Sophie understood Cassandra’s psychology.

Cassandra did not want to kill Margaret privately.

She wanted to force Sophie to surrender in front of the same social class that had rejected her.

The first gala took away Cassandra’s image.

The second was meant to restore it.

Sophie decided to go.

“You are eleven,” Lucas said.

“I am the person she asked for.”

“That does not make it your responsibility.”

“She took Grandma because of me.”

“She took Margaret because Cassandra is a criminal.”

Sophie looked at him.

“You left because you thought running would protect everyone.”

Lucas flinched.

“I am not running.”

“Neither am I.”

Evelyn prepared three copies of the flight recording.

One was placed on an encrypted drive.

Another remained with federal agents.

The third was a decoy.

Daniel designed a communication device inside Sophie’s necklace.

Mia arranged for independent live-stream equipment outside Cassandra’s control.

Detective Pike placed undercover agents among the gala staff.

The Whitmore Mountain Resort stood beside a frozen lake surrounded by dark pine forests.

Snow fell heavily as guests entered.

Many believed the gala had been reinstated by the board.

They had no idea Cassandra was inside.

At eight o’clock, the ballroom lights dimmed.

The doors locked.

Judge Bell appeared on the stage with a pistol.

Cassandra stood beside him wearing a white gown.

Margaret sat in a chair between them, her hands tied.

The guests panicked.

Bell fired once into the ceiling.

Silence followed.

Cassandra lifted a microphone.

“Please remain calm.”

Her voice carried the polished warmth of an experienced hostess.

“No one will be harmed if Sophie Bennett cooperates.”

Sophie walked into the ballroom.

Gasps followed her.

Daniel remained hidden behind the service corridor.

Lucas and federal agents waited outside the locked doors.

Sophie held the encrypted drive.

Cassandra smiled.

“You always did enjoy entrances.”

“Let my grandmother go.”

“Give Judge Bell the recording.”

Margaret looked at Sophie.

“Do not.”

Bell pressed the pistol against Margaret’s shoulder.

Sophie held up the drive.

“You get this after she walks away.”

Cassandra laughed.

“You are negotiating because adults have filled your head with courage.”

“No.”

Sophie looked around the ballroom.

“I am negotiating because you need an audience.”

Cassandra’s smile weakened.

Sophie continued.

“You could have taken the recording privately.”

“You could have run.”

“You came here because you want these people to believe you still matter.”

Several guests lowered their eyes.

Cassandra’s entire identity depended on their admiration.

“You think they care about you?” Cassandra asked.

“They care about entertainment.”

“They watched your humiliation and called it justice.”

“They will watch yours and call it the same.”

Sophie nodded.

“Maybe.”

“But the difference is that I did not force you to hit me.”

Cassandra’s eyes hardened.

Judge Bell demanded the drive.

Sophie tossed it across the stage.

Bell caught it.

He inserted it into the control console.

The giant screen displayed a single file.

FLIGHT 217.

Bell selected delete.

The system asked for authorization.

He entered a code.

FILE DESTROYED appeared across the screen.

Cassandra exhaled.

Then Sophie’s face appeared on every display.

A pre-recorded message began.

“The file you deleted was a copy.”

Cassandra turned toward Sophie.

Sophie was still standing in the ballroom.

The recording continued.

“The original was delivered to federal prosecutors six hours ago.”

Bell pulled the drive from the console.

“You lied.”

Sophie looked at him.

“You taught my grandfather that information is power.”

“I learned something different.”

“Information becomes power when everyone receives it.”

Mia activated the independent broadcast.

The entire ballroom began streaming live.

Millions of viewers watched Cassandra and Bell holding Margaret hostage.

Cassandra realized what had happened.

She seized Margaret and pulled a blade from beneath her gown.

Daniel moved from the corridor.

Bell fired toward him.

Guests screamed and dropped beneath tables.

Daniel returned fire, striking Bell’s weapon from his hand.

Margaret drove her cane into Cassandra’s foot.

Sophie ran toward her grandmother.

Cassandra caught Sophie by the wrist and dragged her toward the terrace.

“Open the doors!” Cassandra shouted.

Bell crawled toward his fallen pistol.

Detective Pike burst through the side entrance and tackled him.

Cassandra forced Sophie outside onto the snow-covered terrace.

Below them, the frozen lake stretched into darkness.

A helicopter waited near the far end.

“Walk,” Cassandra ordered.

Sophie glanced back.

The ballroom doors were blocked by overturned tables.

Daniel was trying to reach them.

Cassandra pressed the blade near Sophie’s shoulder.

“You took everything from me.”

Sophie kept moving.

“No.”

“My father’s recording did.”

“Your mother began this.”

“My mother tried to stop you.”

Cassandra’s breathing became ragged.

“She could have walked away.”

“So could you.”

They reached the lake.

The ice groaned beneath their weight.

The helicopter pilot waved urgently.

Cassandra pulled Sophie forward.

A crack shot across the frozen surface.

Sophie stopped.

Cassandra shoved her.

May you like

The ice broke.

Sophie plunged into the freezing water.
