Chapter 4 — One Last Visit

Five years later...

The cemetery looked different.

The maple trees had grown taller.

Fresh flowers rested beneath Michael's headstone.

A little girl skipped across the grass wearing yellow rain boots.

"Grandma! Hurry!"

Margaret laughed.

"I'm coming."

Emily followed behind, carrying a picnic basket.

Life had not erased their grief.

It had simply taught them how to carry it together.

Lily knelt beside the grave.

"Hi, Daddy."

"I started kindergarten."

"I can read now."

"And Grandma says I laugh just like you."

Margaret smiled through tears.

"You do."

Emily placed fresh white lilies beside the headstone.

"I wish you could see her."

"But somehow..."

"I think you already do."

The afternoon breeze rustled the leaves overhead.

For a brief moment, sunlight broke through the clouds and warmed the stone.

Margaret looked from the grave to the child chasing butterflies nearby.

Years ago, she had come to this cemetery believing she had lost her entire family.

Instead, she had found the daughter her son never got the chance to raise...

...and the woman he had loved enough to build a future with.

Love had survived death in the smallest, most beautiful way imaginable.

Not through memories alone.

But through a little girl whose laughter carried her father's spirit into every new season.

As Lily ran back toward them, Margaret opened her arms.

Three generations embraced beside the grave.

And for the first time since the day she buried her son...

May you like

The cemetery no longer felt like the place where her family ended.

It had become the place where it began again.
