Chapter 1 — The Secret He Never Had the Chance to Tell

The words hung in the cold autumn air.

"He was this baby's father."

For several long seconds, neither woman moved.

Margaret Dawson stared at the infant as though the world had tilted beneath her feet.

"No," she whispered. "My son wasn't married."

"He wasn't," the young woman answered quietly.

"And he never mentioned a child."

"I know."

Margaret's eyes hardened.

"My son never lied to me."

The young woman lowered her gaze.

"He didn't."

Silence settled between them, broken only by the wind moving through the cemetery's maple trees.

"My name is Emily Carter."

She carefully adjusted the sleeping baby in her arms.

"My daughter's name is Lily."

Margaret refused to look away.

"If you're telling the truth... explain."

Emily swallowed hard.

"We met two years ago."

"It started as friendship."

"Then it became everything."

Margaret listened without speaking.

"We planned to tell you after he proposed."

Margaret frowned.

"Proposed?"

Emily slowly reached into her coat pocket.

She pulled out a small velvet box.

Inside rested a simple diamond ring.

"He bought it three weeks before the accident."

Margaret's breathing became uneven.

She recognized the ring immediately.

She had gone shopping with her son that afternoon.

He had smiled like a little boy.

"I finally found the one."

She remembered teasing him.

"When do I get to meet her?"

He had laughed.

"Soon, Mom. I want it to be perfect."

But "soon" never came.

The drunk driver who crossed the center line ended every plan her son had ever made.

Margaret's eyes filled with tears.

"You were... the woman?"

Emily nodded.

"He wanted to surprise you."

Margaret looked at the baby again.

The infant stirred.

Then tiny gray eyes slowly opened.

Her heart nearly stopped.

Those eyes...

They were identical to her son's.

The same unusual shade of silver-blue.

The same tiny birthmark behind the left ear.

Margaret had kissed that birthmark thousands of times when her son was little.

Her knees nearly gave out.

Emily reached forward instinctively.

"Are you okay?"

Margaret covered her mouth.

May you like

"Oh my God..."

The impossible suddenly felt terrifyingly real.
