Chapter 5 - Claire’s Music Box

Lily led us to the old greenhouse behind the mansion.

The building had been locked since Claire’s death.

She had loved gardening and spent hours among the climbing roses, white orchids, and lemon trees.

After the funeral, Grant could no longer bring himself to enter.

Renata ordered the building sealed.

She claimed the dying plants upset Lily.

Harris cut through the rusted lock.

The door opened with a long groan.

Cold air rushed past us.

Most of the plants were dead.

Dry vines clung to the walls.

Broken pots littered the floor.

Grant stood in the doorway, overwhelmed by memories.

“Claire designed this place.”

Lily took his hand.

It was the first time she had touched him willingly since speaking.

Grant looked down at their joined hands.

For a moment, he could not move.

Then Lily gently pulled him forward.

She led us toward a stone planter shaped like a swan.

Inside, beneath hardened soil and dead roots, lay a waterproof plastic container.

Grant removed the lid.

The blue music box was inside.

Its painted surface showed a young girl dancing beneath silver stars.

Lily pressed the small brass latch.

The melody began.

It was Claire’s favorite lullaby.

Grant covered his mouth.

A tiny ballerina turned beneath the lid.

After three rotations, the figure stopped.

A panel beneath it clicked open.

Inside lay a key, a memory card, and a folded letter.

Grant recognized Claire’s handwriting.

His hands trembled as he unfolded the paper.

Grant,

If you are reading this, I was right to be afraid.

I need you to understand that I never stopped loving you.

The financial records I found appeared to carry your authorization, but I now believe your identity was used.

Adrian has been moving money from the Hale Foundation into offshore accounts.

Renata is helping him.

I trusted her.

That may be the mistake that kills me.

They know I found the transfers.

I copied everything.

The evidence is hidden where your father placed the first stone of this house.

Do not confront Adrian until Lily is safe.

There is something else.

Someone inside the security team is helping them.

I do not know who.

Trust Maya.

She has protected Lily when others were too distracted to see what was happening.

Tell Lily that her mother loved her more than life.

Claire

Grant read the letter twice.

Then he sank onto an overturned stone bench.

I could not speak.

Claire had trusted me.

She had written my name on the night she expected to die.

I remembered the final conversation we had shared.

She stood outside Lily’s nursery wearing a pale blue dress.

She looked exhausted.

“Maya, if I ask you to take Lily somewhere safe, will you do it?”

I thought she was worried about the storm.

“Of course.”

“No matter who tells you to bring her back?”

I smiled, not understanding.

“No matter who.”

Claire touched my arm.

“You are a good person.”

Those were the last words she ever said to me.

Detective Ruiz inserted the memory card into a secured reader.

Several folders appeared.

Financial reports.

Emails.

Copies of offshore transfers.

Photographs of Adrian and Renata entering hotels together.

The images dated back more than four years.

Grant stared at them.

Renata had begun an affair with Adrian before Claire died.

Perhaps before she ever met Grant.

One video file was labeled INSURANCE.

Ruiz opened it.

Claire appeared on the screen.

She was sitting in the greenhouse.

The recording had been made three days before her death.

“If you are watching this, I may no longer be alive.”

Grant pressed his fist against his lips.

Claire continued.

“Adrian and Renata have stolen more than forty million dollars from the Hale Foundation. The money was intended for children’s hospitals and domestic violence shelters.”

Her eyes were red.

“I believe they are preparing to blame Grant.”

Grant looked down.

Claire spoke directly to the camera.

“Grant, I am sorry I doubted you. I found proof that Adrian duplicated your authorization credentials.”

She held up a printed message.

“I confronted Renata this morning. She claimed Adrian forced her, but she refused to explain how.”

Claire paused.

“I agreed to meet them both at the mansion tomorrow night.”

Ruiz leaned closer to the screen.

“Both.”

Claire knew Adrian would be there.

The video continued.

“There is another person involved. Someone with enough influence to control the police investigation if I die.”

The image flickered.

Claire glanced toward the greenhouse door.

“I cannot say the name on this recording. The key inside the music box opens a private deposit vault at First Meridian Bank. The final evidence is there.”

The screen went black.

Grant turned the brass key over in his hand.

“My father placed the first stone of the mansion.”

Ruiz looked toward the main house.

“Do you know where?”

“The original cornerstone is beneath the east atrium.”

The same atrium where Claire died.

Harris’s phone rang.

He answered, listened, and turned toward Grant.

“Renata has been released on bail.”

Grant stood.

“How?”

“Crowe convinced the judge that she poses no flight risk.”

“She has a false passport.”

“The passport has not completed forensic processing.”

Ruiz took out her phone.

“I will request an emergency no-contact order.”

Harris stared through the greenhouse windows.

A black sedan had appeared beyond the iron gates.

Renata stepped out.

She wore a dark coat and sunglasses.

Simon Crowe followed her.

The police officers at the gate blocked their path.

Renata did not argue.

She simply looked toward the greenhouse.

Even from that distance, I could feel her eyes on Lily.

Then she lifted her phone.

My phone rang.

An unknown number appeared on the screen.

I answered.

Renata’s voice was calm.

“You found the music box.”

I looked toward Ruiz.

She signaled for the call to be recorded.

“You will never touch Lily again.”

Renata laughed softly.

“You still think this is about Lily?”

“What do you want?”

“The key.”

Grant stepped closer to the phone.

“You are finished.”

Renata’s tone changed.

“Ask your father why Claire was afraid to say his name.”

Grant stopped breathing.

Renata continued.

“You have twenty-four hours to give me the key.”

“Or what?”

“You will receive Naomi Price in pieces.”

May you like

The call ended.

On the video screen behind us, Naomi’s secure connection suddenly went black.
