Chapter 16 - The Broadcast

The television network believed Simon Crowe was hiding somewhere outside the United States.

Ruiz believed he remained close enough to monitor the Hale investigation.

Grant agreed to appear remotely from a secure federal facility.

The producers thought the arrangement protected Crowe’s location.

In reality, federal technicians embedded tracking software in the video feed.

The interview began at eight.

Crowe appeared against a dark background.

A bandage covered one side of his forehead.

He looked composed.

“Claire Hale was not murdered,” he told the host.

“She was a troubled woman who stole charitable funds and attempted to blame innocent people.”

The host asked about the recovered security footage.

“Manipulated.”

“The financial records?”

“Fabricated.”

“Why did you flee?”

“Because Grant Hale is using his wealth to control the investigation.”

Grant appeared on the split screen.

Crowe smiled.

“Grant.”

“You struck Claire before she died.”

“She attacked me.”

“You arranged Sofia Bennett’s murder.”

“That accusation comes from a woman who benefits financially from the Hale estate.”

He meant me.

Crowe continued.

“Maya Bennett manipulated Lily for years.”

Grant’s voice remained calm.

“Then why did Renata attempt to burn Lily’s scalp?”

“An unfortunate misunderstanding.”

“Why did Renata attend the Boston gala using a double?”

Crowe did not answer directly.

The tracking software searched network nodes.

Ruiz watched from the control room.

No location yet.

Crowe lifted a small remote.

“I have video proving Claire planned to leave Grant and take Lily.”

The screen changed.

Claire appeared inside her bedroom.

The timestamp showed the afternoon before her death.

“I cannot allow Lily to remain in this house.”

Grant’s expression changed.

Claire continued.

“Grant refuses to see what his family is.”

The recording ended.

Crowe looked triumphant.

“Claire intended to abduct Lily and accuse Grant of financial crimes.”

Grant looked toward the camera.

“Play the entire recording.”

“That is the entire recording.”

“No.”

Lily had warned us.

The video was from Mommy’s room.

Claire had recorded more.

I stood beside Ruiz.

“We have the original.”

The bank drive contained several corrupted files.

Technicians had recovered one only twenty minutes earlier.

Ruiz signaled the producer.

A new video replaced Crowe’s face.

Claire appeared again.

The same room.

The same moment.

The same words.

“I cannot allow Lily to remain in this house while Renata and Adrian have access to her.”

Crowe had removed the end of the sentence.

Claire continued.

“Grant refuses to see what his family is becoming because Adrian has used his authorization codes and convinced him the foundation losses are routine.”

She looked exhausted.

“I am taking Lily to my sister’s home until Grant understands the danger.”

Claire had not planned to disappear.

She had planned to protect her child.

The recording continued.

“If anything happens to me, Simon Crowe arranged it.”

Crowe’s face reappeared.

For the first time, he looked frightened.

The tracking software identified a server relay in New Jersey.

Ruiz dispatched agents.

Crowe attempted to disconnect.

Grant spoke quickly.

“Your own archive proves everything.”

Crowe froze.

“You recovered nothing from the sanatorium.”

“We recovered payments, recordings, and your instructions to Renata.”

Crowe’s eyes moved toward someone outside the frame.

He was not alone.

A woman screamed.

The camera shifted.

Naomi appeared behind him.

Crowe had kidnapped her again.

Federal protection had moved her to a safe apartment that morning.

Someone inside the operation had disclosed the location.

Crowe pressed a gun against her neck.

“The broadcast ends now.”

Ruiz spoke into her radio.

The tracking signal narrowed to an abandoned television studio outside Newark.

Agents were eight minutes away.

Grant kept Crowe talking.

“If you kill her, you lose your last bargaining tool.”

“I have survived worse.”

“You survived because other people protected you.”

Crowe laughed.

“Your father protected me. Your brother paid me. Your wife trusted me. Every Hale believed I belonged to someone else.”

He was right.

Crowe survived in the spaces between powerful people.

No one claimed responsibility for him, so everyone avoided looking too closely.

Naomi’s eyes moved toward the floor.

Then toward the camera.

She slowly lifted one hand.

Her fingers formed a sign.

I recognized it.

Lily had taught Naomi several of our private signals at the treatment facility.

BIRD.

Something important.

Naomi looked toward the left side of the room.

A dark window reflected Crowe’s equipment.

Beside the monitor stood a canister marked with a fire suppression symbol.

Ruiz understood.

She transmitted instructions to Naomi through the studio teleprompter.

The words appeared on the monitor facing Crowe.

He saw only Grant’s video.

Naomi saw the hidden message.

PULL FIRE RELEASE.

She moved suddenly.

Crowe grabbed her.

Naomi slammed her elbow into the wall lever.

White suppressant exploded from the ceiling.

The studio disappeared inside a cloud.

Crowe fired blindly.

Grant shouted her name.

Agents entered seconds later.

The live feed showed shadows moving through the smoke.

Then silence.

Ruiz received the confirmation.

“Naomi is alive.”

“And Crowe?”

“Captured.”

Grant closed his eyes.

The host stared at the camera.

Millions of viewers had witnessed Crowe’s crime live.

There would be no quiet settlement.

No sealed file.

No purchased silence.

Claire’s truth had reached the world in her own voice.

When Grant returned to the hotel, Lily waited near the elevator.

“Did Mommy talk?”

“Yes.”

“Did people hear?”

“Everyone heard.”

Lily smiled for the first time since the dressing room.

Then Detective Ruiz called again.

Crowe was offering a complete confession.

But only if he could speak to me.
