Chapter 2: Every Lie Leaves a Trail

Isabella was furious.
"You can't keep me here!"
Hospital security blocked the hallway.
"We're simply asking you to remain available."
"My lawyer will destroy this hospital."
Director Jonathan Hayes appeared.
"No."
His calm voice carried more authority than shouting ever could.
"You assaulted a pregnant patient inside my hospital."
Isabella laughed.
"You have no proof."
Jonathan looked toward the security supervisor.
"Show her."
The large monitor lit up.
Five synchronized camera angles.
Every movement.
Every shove.
Every second.
Color drained from Isabella's face.
"That's impossible..."
Jonathan folded his arms.
"The truth usually feels impossible to people who've been lying."
Marcus remained silent.
Silence frightened Isabella more than anger.
"Marcus..."
She reached for his arm.
He stepped away.
"Don't touch me."
"You know I love you."
Marcus looked at her as though seeing a stranger.
"Love?"
He pulled his phone from his pocket.
"My investigators have been watching you for six months."
She froze.
"What?"
"I hired them because anonymous messages kept arriving."
He opened a folder.
Photographs appeared one after another.
Luxury hotels.
Private dinners.
Secret vacations.
Not with Marcus.
With Daniel Brooks.
The financial consultant Marcus himself had hired.
Isabella stumbled backward.
"You had me followed?"
"No."
Marcus answered quietly.
"I had the truth followed."
The final report arrived minutes later.
Daniel had diverted millions of dollars through shell companies.
Isabella had signed documents using fake charities as cover.
Together...
They had planned to disappear after Marcus filed for divorce.
The affair had never been about love.
It had been about money.
And Khloe's pregnancy threatened everything.
Just after midnight...
The operating room doors opened.
The surgeon smiled.
"Mother and baby are alive."
Marcus nearly collapsed from relief.
"The baby will need observation."
"What about Khloe?"
"She'll recover."
Jonathan looked directly at Marcus.
"Whether your marriage recovers..."
"That depends on what kind of man you become."
Marcus lowered his head.
For the first time in years...

He realized protecting someone required more than providing luxury.
It required believing them before strangers.
