Chapter 1: The Footage No One Could Erase

"She attacked me."
The words echoed through the hospital suite.
Marcus looked from Isabella's flawless makeup to his wife lying on the marble floor, one trembling hand wrapped protectively around her swollen stomach.
"Marcus..."
Khloe's voice was barely a whisper.
"I... I think something's wrong with the baby."
Everything else disappeared.
Marcus dropped to his knees beside her.
"Call the emergency team!" he shouted.
Elaine Parker was already reaching for the panic button mounted beside the suite entrance.
Within seconds, nurses and physicians rushed into the room.
"Thirty-two weeks pregnant," one nurse announced.
"Possible abdominal trauma."
"We need Labor and Delivery immediately."
As they lifted Khloe onto a stretcher, Isabella stepped forward dramatically.
"Marcus, she's lying. She attacked me first."
He didn't even look at her.
His attention never left his wife.
"Save my son."
Those were the only words he managed before the elevator doors closed.
Twenty minutes later...
Outside the operating suite, Marcus paced like a man awaiting judgment.
A distinguished man in a navy suit walked briskly down the hallway.
Hospital employees immediately straightened.
"Director Hayes."
Marcus turned.
"Director, thank you for coming."
The man's eyes searched the corridor until they landed on the operating room doors.
"Where is she?"
Marcus frowned.
"My wife is inside."
Without another word, Director Jonathan Hayes pushed past everyone.
The head nurse hurried after him.
"Sir, family only—"
"I am family."
The hallway fell silent.
Marcus stared after him.
"What do you mean?"
Jonathan stopped.
His expression hardened.
"Khloe Thorne is my niece."
No one spoke.
Marcus felt the blood drain from his face.
In three years of marriage...
Khloe had never mentioned having family connected to one of the country's most influential medical institutions.
Inside the operating room...
Jonathan gently held Khloe's hand.
"I'm here, sweetheart."
Tears slipped from the corners of her eyes.
"I'm sorry, Uncle Jonathan."
"You have nothing to apologize for."
She swallowed painfully.
"I didn't want anyone thinking I married Marcus because of our family."
Jonathan smiled sadly.
"You've always protected everyone except yourself."
Outside...
Marcus replayed every conversation he'd ever had with his wife.
Every time she insisted on paying her own charitable donations.
Every time she avoided discussing her childhood.
Every time she refused special treatment.
He had mistaken humility for simplicity.
He had never asked the questions that mattered.
Then a security officer approached.
"Mr. Thorne..."
"Yes?"
"There may be something you need to see."
Minutes later...
The hospital surveillance room became painfully quiet.
The footage played from beginning to end.
There were no blind spots.
No missing seconds.
No edited angles.
Everyone watched Isabella shove Khloe.
Everyone watched the kick.
Everyone watched Khloe collapse.
No one saw Khloe strike Isabella even once.
Marcus clenched his fists.
"Play it again."
The video rolled a second time.
This time he noticed something else.
Just before attacking...
Isabella glanced directly toward the hidden hallway camera.
As if she believed it wasn't recording.
As if she had rehearsed everything.
Marcus slowly stood.
"Seal every copy."
The security chief nodded.
"Already done."
"And don't let Isabella Rossi leave this hospital."
For the first time that night...
May you like
Marcus wasn't searching for explanations.
He was preparing for war.
