Chapter 1 – The Necklace That Shouldn't Exist

The ballroom erupted into stunned silence the instant the necklace snapped.
Pearls scattered across the marble floor, but no one noticed them.
Every eye was fixed on the silver pendant that had fallen from the broken chain.
The elderly woman who had ripped the necklace away froze.
Her face turned ghostly white.
"No..." she whispered.
"It can't be..."
The pendant had opened during the fall.
Inside was an old photograph protected beneath cracked glass.
A young couple smiled into the camera.
Between them rested a newborn baby wrapped in a white blanket.
Engraved beneath the picture were six words.
"Our daughter. Never let them find her."
The old woman's hands began to shake.
She knew that photograph.
She had burned every copy of it thirty years ago.
Or so she believed.
The young girl slowly bent down and picked up the pendant.
"You recognize it," she said quietly.
The room fell even quieter.
"I've worn this necklace since I was a baby."
"My grandmother always told me that one day... someone would be terrified to see it."
The woman staggered backward.
Guests exchanged confused looks.
The groom frowned.
"Mother..."
"What is she talking about?"
The old woman couldn't answer.
Because for the first time in thirty years...

The secret she had buried was staring directly back at her.
And it had just walked into her son's wedding.
