Chapter 14 - THE MARRIAGE MARGARET CHOSE

Six years earlier, Nathan met Claire at a charity auction.

He spilled wine on her dress.

She laughed.

He apologized.

They talked for three hours.

Nathan had spent years believing it was the most important accident of his life.

It had not been an accident.

Margaret sponsored the event.

Margaret arranged the seating.

Margaret ensured Claire received an invitation.

Margaret had investigated her beforehand.

Why?

Thomas’s archive contained the answer.

Claire’s father had died of a rare respiratory disorder.

Her family carried a genetic marker associated with inflammatory lung disease.

Rebecca’s original research focused on that same marker.

Nathan stared at the page.

“She chose Claire because of her genetics?”

Laura looked sick.

“It appears so.”

Claire stepped away.

“No.”

Nathan followed her.

“Claire—”

“Don’t.”

She wrapped her arms around herself.

“My marriage…”

“Was real.”

“Was it?”

“Yes.”

“Your mother selected me.”

“I didn’t know.”

“But she put me in front of you.”

“Yes.”

Claire laughed bitterly.

“And Noah?”

Nobody answered.

Claire looked at the research documents.

“Was he part of this?”

Nathan’s face tightened.

“Noah is our son.”

“That isn’t what I asked.”

Daniel read deeper into the archive.

Then stopped.

“What?”

Nathan demanded.

Daniel looked at Claire.

“Margaret believed a child combining Rebecca’s line with yours might carry a specific response marker.”

Claire’s knees weakened.

Nathan caught her.

“She used us as a breeding experiment?”

Laura said quickly, “We don’t know that.”

Claire pointed at the papers.

“What else would you call it?”

Nathan felt rage become something purer.

No confusion remained.

No family loyalty.

No history.

Margaret had selected Claire.

Manipulated their meeting.

Waited for a child.

Monitored Claire’s pregnancy.

Influenced Noah’s medical care.

Then manufactured illnesses to build a custody case.

And underneath everything was money.

Research.

Control.

Nathan whispered, “She never saw us as people.”

Caroline answered.

“She never does.”

Daniel found another record.

Margaret had financed genetic testing after Noah’s birth.

Without Nathan or Claire’s consent.

Dr. Mercer ordered it under a routine metabolic panel.

The results showed Noah possessed the marker Margaret wanted.

Then the medical episodes began.

Claire became physically ill.

“She was testing something on him?”

Daniel shook his head.

“No evidence.”

Nathan grabbed his shirt.

“Don’t protect her.”

“I’m not.”

Daniel pulled free.

“I’m saying the altered medicine may not have been a trial.”

“What then?”

“To make him sick enough for documentation.”

Claire whispered, “That’s supposed to make me feel better?”

Nobody answered.

Then Hayes entered.

“We found Richard Bell.”

Nathan turned.

“Where?”

“Switzerland.”

“And Rebecca?”

“Alive.”

Caroline exhaled.

“Where is she?”

“Police intercepted them at a train station.”

Nathan closed his eyes.

Rebecca was safe.

Then Hayes continued.

“But Richard claims he wasn’t working for Margaret.”

Nathan opened his eyes.

“Who was he working for?”

“Thomas.”

Silence.

Nathan stared.

“My father is dead.”

“Richard says Thomas hired him sixteen years ago.”

“For what?”

“To watch Margaret.”

Nathan laughed bitterly.

“Then why kidnap Rebecca?”

“He says he didn’t.”

Caroline frowned.

“Rebecca went with him?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Hayes looked at Nathan.

“To recover evidence hidden in Zurich.”

“What evidence?”

“A genetic-research archive.”

Nathan felt dread return.

Hayes continued.

“Richard says Rebecca was afraid to tell you something on the video call.”

Claire asked, “What?”

Hayes hesitated.

“Nathan…”

“What?”

“According to Richard, Rebecca’s research wasn’t merely about treating respiratory disease.”

Nathan waited.

“It was about identifying a hereditary immune disorder in the Caldwell bloodline.”

Nathan frowned.

“So?”

Hayes looked toward Noah’s hospital room.

“Your son has it.”

Claire stopped breathing.

Nathan whispered, “Is he sick?”

“Not from what Richard says.”

“Then what?”

“He says some of Noah’s attacks may have been genuine.”

Nathan’s anger stalled.

Hayes continued.

“And there is a treatment.”

Claire looked up.

“What treatment?”

“Rebecca developed it.”

Nathan felt hope for the first time.

Then Hayes finished.

“But Margaret owns the only surviving patent.”
