Chapter 12 - THE NIGHT WITHOUT NOAH

The hospital allowed Nathan and Claire thirty supervised minutes.

Noah did not understand.

“Home?”

Claire smiled through tears.

“Soon, baby.”

“Mommy come?”

“Yes.”

“Daddy?”

Nathan swallowed.

“Always.”

Noah held up his arms.

Claire picked him up.

A social worker stood six feet away.

Watching.

Taking notes.

Nathan hated everything about it.

When time ended, Noah cried.

Claire almost broke.

Nathan had to physically guide her out of the room.

The door closed.

Their son screamed for them.

Claire turned on Nathan in the hallway.

“You should have stopped her years ago.”

He did not defend himself.

“I know.”

“You should have believed me.”

“I know.”

“You kept saying she meant well.”

“I know.”

Claire struck his chest once.

Not hard.

Then again.

Nathan stood there.

“I know.”

Claire collapsed against him.

He held her while she cried.

Finally she whispered, “I hate her.”

Nathan looked through the glass at Noah.

“So do I.”

That frightened him.

Because he meant it.

The fake video became their priority.

A digital-forensics specialist named Elena Park examined the file.

Within three hours, she found inconsistencies.

Lighting shifts.

Audio discontinuities.

Generated frames.

But proving manipulation in court required locating the original.

“Where is the cloud server?” Nathan asked.

Elena typed.

“The account routes through multiple relays.”

“Can you find the source?”

“Eventually.”

Nathan hated that word.

Claire noticed something.

“The camera in the nursery had the wrong date.”

“Yes.”

“What if that wasn’t a mistake?”

Elena looked at her.

Claire continued.

“What if Margaret intentionally changed the clock?”

Nathan understood.

“So she could move clips around.”

Elena nodded slowly.

“If she recorded dozens of arguments over months…”

“She could construct scenes.”

Elena began searching again.

Then she found something.

The cloud account had administrator access.

Three users.

Margaret.

Victor Lang.

And—

MCaldwell_Admin2.

Nathan frowned.

“Margaret has two accounts?”

Elena shook her head.

“The second one has different login behavior.”

“Meaning?”

“Different location. Different device.”

“Who?”

She traced the most recent login.

The IP address belonged to Caldwell Biomedical.

Executive research division.

Daniel had resigned.

Margaret had never worked from that building.

Nathan looked at the login time.

Someone accessed the account while Margaret was in court.

Claire whispered, “She has another person.”

Elena nodded.

“And they’re still inside your company.”

Daniel provided a list of twelve employees with access.

They narrowed it to three.

One name stunned Nathan.

Richard Bell.

Nathan’s executive assistant.

Richard had worked for Nathan for seven years.

He knew Nathan’s travel schedule.

His passwords.

His car arrangements.

His medical appointments.

His family calendar.

Everything.

Police went to Richard’s apartment.

Empty.

Computer gone.

Clothes gone.

Photographs removed.

But inside the trash, investigators found a shredded airline itinerary.

Destination:

Zurich.

Nathan called Rebecca immediately.

“Leave the institute.”

“Why?”

“Someone may be coming.”

Rebecca’s face tightened.

“You think Margaret found me?”

“Yes.”

“I’ve been hidden twenty-seven years.”

“She knows you’re alive now.”

Rebecca went silent.

Caroline leaned toward the screen.

“Rebecca, listen to him.”

Finally Rebecca nodded.

“I’ll leave tonight.”

Nathan looked at Hayes.

“Get someone to her.”

“We’re contacting Swiss authorities.”

Then Rebecca suddenly looked offscreen.

Someone had entered her office.

Her expression changed.

Nathan stood.

“Mom?”

The word escaped before he could stop it.

Rebecca looked back into the camera.

“Nathan.”

“Who is there?”

No answer.

The screen shook.

Claire grabbed Nathan’s arm.

“Rebecca?”

Rebecca whispered:

May you like

“He found me.”

The connection ended.
