CHAPTER 6 — THE NAME ELENA HID

The hidden room fell silent.
Alexander stared at the speaker.
Veronica's final words kept echoing in his mind.
Elena didn't die because she discovered the money.
She died because she discovered who Sofia really was.
Alexander looked down at his daughter.
Sofia was trembling.
“Daddy…”
Alexander immediately pulled her closer.
“Don't listen to her.”
“But what did she mean?”
“I don't know.”
Margaret stepped toward the locked steel door.
“She wants you frightened.”
Alexander turned.
“You knew about this?”
Margaret's eyes met his.
“I knew Elena was hiding something.”
“What?”
“I never knew the entire truth.”
Alexander's patience snapped.
“My wife died twelve years ago. My daughter has been abused in my own house. Veronica has been stealing from my family. And now you're telling me you don't know the truth?”
Margaret didn't flinch.
“I know enough to tell you this.”
She pointed toward the metal box.
“Whatever is inside there is the reason Elena kept Sofia's identity secret.”
Alexander grabbed the box.
“How do we open it?”
Margaret looked at the silver key.
“Try it.”
Alexander inserted the key.
Nothing happened.
He turned it.
Click.
The lid opened.
Inside were three things.
A passport.
A birth certificate.
And a small red envelope.
Alexander picked up the birth certificate.
His hands began shaking.
The mother's name was Elena Voss.
The father's name was blank.
The child's name was not Sofia Voss.
It read:
Sofia Elena Mercer.
Alexander stared at it.
“No.”
Margaret said nothing.
Alexander looked at Sofia.
“My daughter…”
Sofia looked confused.
“Why does it say Mercer?”
Alexander swallowed hard.
“Because your mother registered you under another name.”
“But why?”
Before anyone could answer, the hidden speaker came alive again.
Veronica's voice returned.
“Because Elena knew what would happen if your father discovered the truth.”
Alexander stepped toward the speaker.
“Stop hiding behind a microphone.”
Veronica laughed.
“You still think this is about money.”
“What is it about?”
“Blood.”
Alexander's face hardened.
“Who is Sofia's father?”
Silence.
Then Veronica answered:
“Daniel Mercer.”
Sofia looked at Alexander.
“But you said I was your daughter.”
Alexander knelt in front of her.
“You are my daughter.”
“But not by blood.”
Alexander's eyes filled with tears.
“Blood doesn't change what you are to me.”
Sofia looked down.
“Then why did Mommy hide it?”
Margaret stepped closer.
“Because Daniel wasn't supposed to survive.”
Alexander looked at her.
“What?”
Margaret took a deep breath.
“Daniel discovered the theft before Elena did. He found proof that Richard and Veronica were draining your father's company.”
“So they tried to kill him?”
“Yes.”
“Did they succeed?”
“No.”
Alexander remembered the investigator's report.
Daniel had disappeared.
Everyone believed he was dead.
But he had survived.
And he had vanished.
Alexander opened the red envelope.
Inside was a letter from Elena.
Alex,
I'm sorry.
I should have told you the truth before Sofia was born.
Daniel is her biological father. But he is not the man I chose to raise her.
Alexander's eyes blurred.
He continued reading.
You were the only man I trusted to love her without asking where she came from.
Alexander pressed the letter against his chest.
Sofia quietly asked,
“Did Mommy love Daddy?”
Alexander looked at her.
“Yes.”
“She chose you?”
“Yes.”
Sofia stepped forward and hugged him.
Alexander held her tightly.
Then Margaret noticed something else inside the box.
A second photograph.
She picked it up.
Her expression changed instantly.
Alexander noticed.
“What?”
Margaret turned the photograph around.
It showed Elena standing beside Daniel.
But there was someone else in the picture.
A woman.
An older woman.
Margaret's face went pale.
“You know her?”
Alexander asked.
Margaret whispered,
“Yes.”
“Who is she?”
Margaret stared at the photograph.
“Your grandmother.”
Alexander froze.
“My grandmother died before I was born.”
“That is what everyone was told.”
Alexander's breathing stopped.
“Who was she really?”
Margaret slowly turned the photograph over.
On the back was a handwritten sentence:
If Sofia is ever in danger, find Evelyn Voss.
Alexander stared at the name.
“Evelyn.”
Margaret nodded.
“She was the first person to discover the truth about the Voss family.”
“And she's alive?”
Margaret hesitated.
“I don't know.”
Suddenly, a loud metallic bang shook the hidden room.
Sofia screamed.
Someone was trying to force the steel door open.
Alexander grabbed the metal box.
Margaret took Sofia's hand.
“Back away.”
Another bang.
The door began to bend.
Then a voice came from the other side.
Richard.
“Alexander!”
Alexander stood between the door and Sofia.
“You're not taking my daughter.”
Richard laughed.
“You still don't understand.”
Another impact.
The lock cracked.
Richard shouted:
“Ask your mother why she lied about where Sofia was born!”
Alexander turned toward Margaret.
“What does he mean?”
Margaret's eyes filled with fear.
Before she could answer—
the steel door exploded inward.
Two armed men rushed into the room.
Alexander pushed Sofia behind him.
Margaret grabbed the red envelope.
And in the chaos, one of the men shouted:
“Get the girl!”
Alexander realized something terrifying.
They hadn't come for the documents.
They hadn't come for the money.
May you like
They had come specifically for Sofia.
And whoever had sent them knew exactly who she was.
