CHAPTER 5 — THE SECRET BEHIND THE FIREPLACE

The mansion went completely dark.
For three seconds, nobody moved.
Then Sofia screamed.
“Daddy!”
Alexander immediately pulled her behind him.
“Stay close.”
The emergency lights flickered on, casting the hallway in a dim red glow.
Margaret remained strangely calm.
She looked toward the end of the corridor.
“They know we're here.”
Alexander's eyes narrowed.
“Who?”
Margaret didn't answer.
A loud crash came from downstairs.
Glass shattered.
Sofia grabbed Alexander's hand.
“What's happening?”
Alexander reached for his phone.
“No signal.”
Margaret shook her head.
“They disabled the system.”
Alexander looked at her.
“How do you know?”
“Because I taught your father how to build it.”
Another crash echoed through the mansion.
Alexander's security team had been locked outside.
Someone had taken control of the house.
Margaret pointed toward the library.
“The fireplace.”
Alexander remembered Sofia's words.
The secret room.
He grabbed his daughter's hand.
“Come on.”
They hurried into the library.
Margaret closed the doors behind them.
Alexander moved toward the massive stone fireplace.
“Where is the entrance?”
Margaret looked at Sofia.
“Show him.”
Sofia hesitated.
Then she stepped forward.
She pressed her hand against the wooden panel beneath the mantel.
Nothing happened.
She tried again.
Still nothing.
Margaret whispered,
“The key.”
Alexander handed Sofia the silver key.
She inserted it into a tiny hidden lock.
Click.
A section of the wall moved.
Behind it was a narrow staircase descending into darkness.
Sofia stared.
“I didn't know there was a staircase.”
Margaret took a flashlight from her purse.
“Your mother did.”
They descended.
At the bottom was a small underground room.
It contained shelves of documents, boxes, photographs, and old videotapes.
Alexander looked around.
“What is this place?”
Margaret answered,
“Your father's insurance policy.”
“Against what?”
“Everyone.”
She walked toward a metal cabinet.
She opened it.
Inside were dozens of folders.
One was labeled:
ELENA VOSS — FINAL DAYS.
Alexander grabbed it.
His hands shook as he opened the first page.
There were photographs of Elena leaving the hospital.
A photograph of her car.
A police report.
And a handwritten statement.
Alexander read it.
Then his face went pale.
“What?”
Margaret stood beside him.
“Read the last paragraph.”
Alexander did.
I believe someone inside the family is trying to kill me.
His breathing became shallow.
“Why didn't I know about this?”
“Because Elena never wanted you involved.”
“She was my wife.”
“She was protecting you.”
Alexander looked at her.
“From whom?”
Margaret's expression hardened.
“From Veronica.”
Sofia was standing nearby.
“Grandma…”
Margaret turned toward her.
“Yes?”
“Did Veronica hurt Mommy?”
Margaret didn't answer immediately.
Then she knelt beside Sofia.
“Your mother discovered that Veronica and Richard were stealing from your grandfather's company.”
Alexander stared at her.
“How much?”
“Enough to destroy the family.”
“Then why didn't Elena tell me?”
“She did.”
Alexander froze.
“What?”
Margaret pulled out another file.
Inside was a letter.
It had never been delivered.
It was addressed to Alexander.
He opened it.
Alex,
If you are reading this, then I wasn't able to tell you everything myself.
Veronica is not who she says she is.
She has been using you.
And Sofia is in danger.
Alexander's eyes filled with tears.
He had received hundreds of letters after Elena died.
But this one had never reached him.
“Who stopped it from reaching me?”
Margaret looked toward the ceiling.
“Veronica.”
Suddenly—
footsteps echoed above them.
Someone was walking through the library.
Alexander turned off the flashlight.
Everyone became silent.
The footsteps stopped.
Then a man's voice came through the floor.
“Search the house.”
Alexander recognized it.
Richard.
“He's here,” Alexander whispered.
Margaret nodded.
“They came for the evidence.”
Alexander looked at the shelves.
“What evidence?”
Margaret pointed toward a locked metal box.
“The evidence that proves Elena was murdered.”
Alexander's eyes widened.
He reached for the box.
Before he could open it—
a gunshot exploded upstairs.
Sofia screamed.
Alexander pulled her into his arms.
Margaret grabbed the box.
“We have to move.”
They rushed toward the rear tunnel.
But before they could reach it, a steel door slammed shut.
Locked.
Alexander tried the handle.
Nothing.
Then a voice echoed through the hidden room.
Veronica.
“You should have left the past buried, Alexander.”
Sofia froze.
“Veronica?”
Her voice came through a hidden speaker.
“Yes, sweetheart.”
Alexander stepped forward.
“Where are you?”
A soft laugh answered.
“Somewhere you should have looked twelve years ago.”
Alexander stared at the speaker.
“What do you want?”
“I want what belongs to me.”
“You've stolen enough.”
“No.”
Veronica's voice became colder.
“You still don't understand.”
Alexander looked at Margaret.
Veronica continued.
“Sofia isn't the heir.”
Silence.
Margaret's face changed.
Alexander whispered,
“What did you say?”
Veronica laughed.
“The trust was never created for Sofia.”
Alexander felt his stomach drop.
“Then who?”
Veronica answered:
“Her mother.”
Margaret closed her eyes.
Alexander stared at the locked door.
Veronica's final words echoed through the room.
“And Elena didn't die because she discovered the money.”
A pause.
“She died because she discovered who Sofia really was.”
The speaker went silent.
Alexander looked at his daughter.
Sofia was trembling in his arms.
And for the first time, Alexander realized the secret surrounding his daughter was far bigger than a stolen fortune.
Someone had spent twelve years hiding her identity.

And whoever that person was—
had just realized the truth was about to come out.
