CHAPTER 1 – THE FOOTAGE NEVER LIES

No one spoke.

The only sound left in the room was the relentless beeping of the fetal monitor.

My father looked at one of the nurses.

"Please secure the recording before anyone has the opportunity to erase it."

Vanessa laughed.

"You think one camera is going to ruin my life?"

The head nurse answered instead.

"It records both video and audio twenty-four hours a day."

For the first time, fear flickered across Vanessa's face.

Ethan stepped forward.

"Sir... maybe we can settle this privately."

My father slowly turned toward him.

"Privately?"

He reached into his jacket and pulled out a thin envelope.

"I've already seen enough."

He emptied its contents onto the hospital bed.

Hotel receipts.

Photographs.

Bank transfers.

A copy of the financial documents Ethan had tried to make me sign.

My stomach tightened.

I had suspected betrayal.

I hadn't realized how carefully it had been planned.

"You forged new ownership agreements," my father said calmly.

"You transferred company assets into shell corporations controlled by Vanessa."

Ethan's lips trembled.

"I was going to explain."

"No."

My father shook his head.

"You were going to steal everything while my daughter was preparing to give birth."

Vanessa suddenly pointed at me.

"She only married him because of money!"

I looked directly into her eyes.

"If I wanted money, I wouldn't have signed a prenuptial agreement protecting Ethan."

Silence.

Vanessa turned toward Ethan.

"You never told me that."

His face answered before his mouth could.

May you like

She had never known.

She wasn't the only one being used.
