Chapter 2: The First Spring

Chapter 2: The First Spring

Winter slowly surrendered to spring, and with it, something inside Emma began to thaw.

For nearly three months, every Tuesday evening belonged to Daniel.

Sometimes they wandered through the galleries in Chelsea.

Sometimes they argued over architecture and literature in quiet cafés hidden between brownstone buildings.

Other nights, they simply walked along the Hudson River, saying almost nothing at all.

Emma discovered that silence didn't always mean loneliness.

Sometimes, it meant comfort.

Daniel never rushed her.

He never asked about her failed marriage.

Instead, he listened whenever she was ready to speak.

One rainy evening, they found themselves sheltering beneath the awning of a tiny coffee shop.

"I used to think love was something you had to earn," Emma admitted quietly.

Daniel looked at her.

"And now?"

She smiled faintly.

"I think it's something you choose every day."

Daniel nodded.

"I've been choosing you for months."

Emma's heart skipped.

She didn't answer.

Instead, she reached for his hand.

For the first time since her divorce...

She wasn't afraid.
