Chapter 2: The Truth Comes Out

Chapter 2: The Truth Comes Out
Leo recovered over the next several days.
Emily slowly began sleeping through the night again.
I worked from home for an entire week.
The more I stayed, the more I realized how much she had been carrying alone.
Every doctor's appointment.
Every grocery trip.
Every midnight fever.
Every load of laundry.
Every meal.
Every invisible responsibility.
I had convinced myself that providing financially was enough.
It wasn't.
One evening I found Emily sitting quietly on the porch.
"I almost called you while you were away," she admitted.
"Why didn't you?"
"I didn't want you worrying."
I sat beside her.
"I thought your mom would actually help."
"So did I."
Emily looked toward the yard where Leo chased bubbles across the grass.
"She kept saying that good wives don't complain."
"She told me if I couldn't handle everything by myself, maybe I wasn't ready to be a mother."
My stomach turned.
"And I believed her."
I reached for her hand.
"No."
"You believed someone who wanted control."
"I believe something different now."
She looked at me.
"What?"
"You're the strongest person I've ever known."
A week later my mother called.
"I think you're overreacting."
"I'd like to come back."
I answered calmly.
"Not until you apologize."
"I don't owe anyone an apology."
"Then you don't have a place in this house."
She hung up.
Months passed.
Birthdays came.
Holidays came.
Still no apology.
